UKCEH is looking for a Molecular Ecology Research Assistant to join our team of talented individuals, contributing to scientific discovery and generating the data, insights and solutions that researchers, industry and governments need to solve complex environmental challenges.
You’ll be joining our Molecular Ecology research group to provide laboratory and field support for a range of molecular and microbiology research projects. Our research focuses on applying genomics to study the composition and functions of biological communities in terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems.
Based in our world-class molecular ecology laboratories in Wallingford, Oxfordshire, you will be involved in multiple laboratory workflows, including DNA extraction, high-throughput sequencing, qPCR and functional assays.
Your main responsibilities will include:
- Preparation of sampling equipment
- Undertaking fieldwork
- Laboratory sample processing including but not limited to sample weighing, DNA extraction, PCR, qPCR and next-generation sequencing
- Assisting with data analysis
- Disseminating information and results (assisting with report writing and academic publications)
- Supporting project leads with stakeholder engagement
For the role of Molecular Ecology Research Assistant, we’re looking for somebody who has:
- A BSc (2:1 or above) in environmental sciences or similar
- Working experience in a molecular ecology/biology laboratory
- Able to demonstrate an organised and methodical approach, with an understanding of sample management and an awareness of health and safety practices
- Excellent interpersonal and time management skills, with the ability to adapt to changing priorities
- A strong interest in environmental research
Desirable:
- 1+ years experience in DNA extraction and PCR techniques
- Is comfortable working in the field and with a range of sample types (e.g. rivers, lakes, agricultural fields)
- Has a full UK driving licence – please confirm in your CV
