Teacher of Biology and Chemistry
- Job Summary
-
Brighton College is seeking to appoint a Teacher of Biology and Chemistry to start in January 2026.
Since January 2020 both departments have been based in Brighton’s new £55 million School of Science and Sport. Amongst a host of other world-class facilities, the building includes six dedicated biology laboratory spaces, six dedicated laboratory spaces for chemistry and ample administrative and technical workspace for staff. Both departments have a well-resourced preparation room with their own dedicated technician.
There are 18 members of staff across the two departments, both having their own Head of Department and a Deputy. Both teams are from a diverse range of backgrounds, including industry and academic research (through which some hold doctorates).
Both departments have a comprehensive Oxbridge programme, with much recent success in this area: in the last four years a total of 21 pupils have secured offers to study Biology and Chemistry.
The Biology DepartmentThe department has exclusive use of six very new laboratories and a preparation room on the top floor of the recently opened School of Science and Sport. The practical emphasis to teaching in the department is further supported by a dedicated glasshouse classroom and an experimental space on the roof of the building.
Public examination results are consistently outstanding. In 2025, 96% of pupils taking biology GCSE achieved a grade 8 or 9 at GCSE (68% 9) and 86% A*-A at A-level (49% A*). The department also has a very comprehensive support programme for candidates applying to Oxbridge and medicine, with much recent success in this area. Last Year 7 candidates went to Cambridge for medicine or biological natural sciences.
We have a range of activities to explore biology beyond the syllabus, including regular extension activities, external speakers, excellent links to local medical schools and universities, sixth form fieldwork days, and successful participation in national Biology competitions and events.
The Chemistry DepartmentThe subject is taught throughout Years 7 to 13. GCSE cohorts average around 210 pupils, with around 80 pupils per year group selecting the subject at A-level. It has consistently been the second most popular A-level subject at the College in recent years behind maths and has a very even gender split, with girls being in a very slight majority. At present we follow the Edexcel syllabuses for both the reformed 9-1 GCSE and A-level. Public examination results in recent years have been outstanding, achieving 97% 9-8 at GCSE (including 76% 9), and 89% A*-A (including 58% A*) at A-level in 2025.
Extension and enrichment activities abound in the department. Each year over 50 pupils take part in the RSC Olympiad and Cambridge Chemistry Challenge; both have seen a record number of ‘gold’ and ‘roentgenium’ awards, respectively.
Significant success is also achieved further down the school. In 2024 the Brighton College team was crowned national champions of the RSC Top of the Bench competition, and in each of the past five years a team of pupils have made it to the regional final of the Year 10 Chemistry Challenge and as of this year, we are the reigning regional champions. Weekly extension clubs for KS3, KS4 and KS5 pupils are also extremely well attended. Overall, Chemistry is one of the most vibrant and dynamic departments at the College.
Role SpecificationThe successful candidate will be expected to teach both subjects to GCSE and at least one of the subjects to A-level.
An ability to contribute towards both departments extension programmes, including a willingness to support pupils with applications to leading universities (including Oxford and Cambridge), will be a distinct advantage.
All teachers within the departments are expected to assist in the development of schemes of work, through the creation of teaching resources and the compilation of content for our Microsoft OneNote Notebooks and SharePoint.

Head of Biology
- Job Summary
-
Brighton College is seeking to appoint a Head of Biology to start in late April 2026.
The Department
The Biology department is part of one of the country’s leading Science departments in terms of results, facilities and educational innovation. Since January 2020 the department has been based in Brighton’s new £55 million School of Science and Sport. Amongst a host of other world-class facilities, the building includes six dedicated biology laboratory spaces, ample dynamic storage and technical workspace for staff. The department has a well-resourced preparation room with its own dedicated technician.
The team consists of 10 members of staff (including the Head of Department, and a Deputy) from a range of diverse backgrounds. The subject is taught as a separate science at KS3, and all pupils study all three sciences at GCSE, with the majority taking the separate sciences pathway for which they achieve very strong results at A-Level. At present we follow the Edexcel syllabus for GCSE and OCR A Biology for A-Level. Results in recent years have been excellent, with pupils achieving Grade 9s at 68% and 96% A*-B at A-Level, with 96% Grades 8–9 at GCSE and 86% A*-A at A-Level in August 2025.
The department also has a comprehensive co-curricular offering. Pupils have secured 16 Oxbridge offers in biology related course in the past two years. Departmental activities and standards are high, and we pride ourselves in the richness and workings of the universe. By taking pupils beyond the constraints of the syllabus, the department aims to develop their problem solving and analytical skills in preparation for the rigorous undergraduate study. In recent years, pupils have achieved an abundance of awards in the British Biology Olympiad competitions.
The department also offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities such as weekly Science Club, Med Soc and an annual trip to Wakehurst Place.
Role SpecificationThe successful candidate will be responsible for the leadership, development and delivery of all aspects of the Biology department, as well as ensuring the highest standards of teaching and learning. They will lead a team of enthusiastic and highly motivated teachers in their progress and career development.
They will be an outstanding classroom practitioner who can inspire others by the passion they have, communicate their love of Biology, and translate this into a curriculum which instils creativity, diversity and challenge amongst all pupils. They will devise and oversee the department’s extension programme: this will include supporting pupils with applications to leading universities (including Oxford and Cambridge).
Additionally, all teachers at Brighton College are expected to contribute to the school’s pastoral system, generally as a tutor in one of our 16 houses (of which six are boarding houses and ten are day).
There is also an expectation that all teachers will contribute to the cocurricular life of the school, through the extensive Games programme, and/or through the leadership of one of almost 100 school societies.

Teacher of Russian
- Job Summary
-
Brighton College is seeking to appoint a Teacher of Russian to start in late April 2026.
The Department
Languages continue to thrive at Brighton College, with the vibrant Russian department playing a key role in that success. The department currently consists of two members of teaching staff, as well as a native speaking assistant. The subject is offered to all year groups in the school, with separate sets in Year 9 for experienced learners and beginners. Russian remains a popular choice of language for non-native speakers, with heritage and native speakers prepared for examinations separately via a bespoke programme.
We follow the Edexcel syllabus for GCSE and A-level, and results in recent years have been excellent. Last year, 100% achieved 9-8 at GCSE, and 100% have achieved an A* at A-level for the past two years. Another point of pride is the amount of sixth form pupils continuing the subject at university, with several securing places at Oxbridge. This is an exciting opportunity to join a relatively young department, helping to promote an unusual language option that attracts curious and committed pupils, but needs passionate and dynamic teachers to promote it. Teaching Russian at Brighton College is a varied and rewarding experience, from helping pupils take their first steps with the Cyrillic alphabet, to teaching advanced cultural and linguistic topics to small groups of highly motivated Sixth Form pupils. The department has also offered a trip to Tallinn in Estonia in the February half term, where pupils have attended Russian language classes in addition to sightseeing.
Role SpecificationThe successful candidate will be expected to teach Russian across the curriculum, from Year 7 to Year 13 and to be an advocate for the learning of the language at every opportunity. A drive to help pupils achieve the best possible public examination results, and the ability to convince pupils of the merits of learning Russian, will be crucial.
A willingness to support pupils with applications to leading universities (including Oxford and Cambridge), will be an advantage, as would the willingness to lead and expand the current programme of trips. The ability to offer an additional foreign language, particularly German, would also be an advantage, but this is by no means essential.
