- Job Summary
-
Brighton College is seeking to appoint a Teacher of Design and Technology to start in August 2026.
The Department
The Design and Technology department at Brighton College is renowned for its creativity, innovation and technical. Housed in a purpose built and fully furnished facility there is a comprehensive CAD/CAM suite including six 3D printers, a large CNC router, mill and lathe, plus a design studio and a high-quality workshop including plasma cutting, waterjet cutting and machining equipment, mirroring the high standards delivered at Brighton College. Yearly investment in tools, equipment and materials ensures pupils are able to problem solve, design, and develop unique and forward-thinking products.
The subject is taught throughout Years 7 and 8, becoming optional in Year 9. Today, numbers are very healthy with 120 pupils opting to study at this stage. At GCSE, more than 40 pupils are studying OCR’s D&T specification and 20 in the 6th form following OCR’s Product Design course. Outside of lessons, the department runs a range of clubs, activities and support sessions including Greenpower, Robotics and a Repair Cafe. Over the last few years, the department has had success in the Design Ventura, Young Artisan competitions, and we have had several Arkwright scholars.
Within the department there are four members of staff, three subject teachers and a full-time technician. Each member of staff has a unique and inspiring background which makes for a varied and comprehensive curriculum. We offer continuous professional development opportunities and nurture a culture of collaborative teamwork, which ensures that both staff and pupils thrive. The results in recent years have been excellent, achieving 100% 9-8 (65% grade 9) at GCSE and 75% A*-A at A-Level. Sixth Form pupils who study Design and Technology go on to study Product Design, Architecture or Engineering at leading universities. The department runs an annual trip to Italy to visit the Lamborghini and Ducati factories. Beyond this, the department is always looking for new ways to broaden pupils’ experiences outside the classroom.
Role SpecificationThe successful candidate will teach a range of DT classes across the College age range, from Year 7 to A-level. They should be enthusiastic and passionate about teaching Product Design, in addition to having extensive subject knowledge and specialist practical experience. We are interested in receiving applications from a range of DT specialisms (electronics or engineering, for example) as we look to expand on the subject specialisms we already offer.
Additionally, all teachers at Brighton College are expected to contribute to the school’s pastoral system, generally as a tutor in one of our 16 houses (of which six are boarding houses and ten are day).
There is also an expectation that all teachers will contribute to the cocurricular life of the school, through the extensive Games programme, and/or through the leadership of one of over 100 school societies.
Candidates are encouraged to point to interests and enthusiasms as part of their application. All staff have the opportunity to contribute to our Masterclass programme; this is a series of weekly lessons designed to celebrate the enjoyment of learning, focusing on an area of personal academic or cultural interest. These have included subjects such as Magical Realism, Cuisine and Culture and Great Debates in History.
All teachers joining Brighton will have the benefit of guidance by an experienced mentor, whose role it will be to provide support during their probationary period. Thereafter, all teachers are expected and supported to participate in continuous professional development, throughout their time at the College.
