BRIGHTON COLLEGE
Brighton
Full-time

Teacher of English

  • Job Summary
  • Brighton College is seeking to appoint a Teacher of English to start in August 2026. The Department

The English department at Brighton College is a highly experienced and collegiate team, where all members are committed to the ethos of not only generating strong results but inspiring a passion for the subject within each year group.

The department currently consists of 12 full time and five part time members of staff. The subject is taught throughout Years 7 to 11 in mixed-ability classes.

There are currently 70 pupils taking the subject at A-level. At present, we follow the OCR syllabus for GCSE and A-level English Literature and the Edexcel IGCSE for English Language. Familiarity with these specifications would be welcome. A passion for engaging pupils of all abilities with the techniques of analysis and essay construction would be very desirable.

Over the past few years, we have focused very carefully on developing the GCSE standard and results through excellent classroom teaching and targeted intervention. This commitment has driven outstanding success: in 2025, 98% of IGCSE Language grades were 7–9, and 96% of GCSE Literature grades achieved the same benchmark.

At A-level, 100% of our pupils regularly achieve A*-B. The department also has a comprehensive Oxbridge programme, with much recent success: 70% of applicants have been awarded offers in the last three years. Results aside, we pride ourselves on the diversity of our teaching: each year, there are over sixty different texts taught to pupils in Year 7 to 13, exploring a broad range of genres, forms, and voices.

The English department is based in the purpose-built space within the College’s performing arts complex (The Richard Cairns Building). The department is housed in a suite of six modern classrooms, each equipped with interactive touch screens and full audio equipment, providing an enhanced learning environment for pupils and staff.

The department offers an extensive programme of activities not related to specifications, including theatre trips, a literary magazine, creative writing, journalism, extension sessions and both Junior and Senior Literary Societies.

    Role Specification

The successful candidate will be expected to teach mainstream English across the curriculum, from Year 7 to A-level. An ability to prioritise intellectual curiosity in the approach to the subject will be greatly valued in teaching practice, as the department continually aims to deepen personal pupil engagement. Given the diversity of texts studied and that we regularly refresh curricula, flexibility and a high level of confidence in adapting to teaching new texts is also required.

An ability to contribute to the broad academic pursuits of the department, including extension clubs and activities, is highly desired. Willingness to support pupils with applications to leading universities (including Oxford and Cambridge), will be a distinct advantage.

All teachers within the department are expected to assist in the development of schemes of work, as well as in the creation of teaching resources and the compilation of content for our Microsoft OneNote Notebooks and SharePoint.

Additionally, all teachers at Brighton College are expected to contribute to the school’s pastoral system, generally as a tutor in one of our 16 houses (of which six are boarding houses and ten are day).

There is also an expectation that all teachers will contribute to the cocurricular life of the school, through the extensive Games programme, and/or through the leadership of one of over 100 school societies.

Candidates are encouraged to point to interests and enthusiasms as part of their application. All staff have the opportunity to contribute to our Masterclass programme; this is a series of weekly lessons designed to celebrate the enjoyment of learning, focusing on an area of personal academic or cultural interest. These have included subjects such as Magical Realism, Cuisine and Culture and Great Debates in History.

All teachers joining Brighton will have the benefit of guidance by an experienced mentor, whose role it will be to provide support during their probationary period. Thereafter, all teachers are expected and supported to participate in continuous professional development, throughout their time at the College.
