Teacher of Psychology

  • Job Summary
  • Brighton College is seeking to appoint a Teacher of Psychology to start in August 2026. The Department

Psychology has long been established as one of the leading Sixth Form departments at Brighton College; the department has gone from strength to strength in recent years, with pupil numbers topping 100 this year.

Since January 2020 the Psychology department, consisting of four members of staff, has been based in Brighton’s new £55 million School of Science and Sport. Amongst a host of other world-class facilities, the building includes dedicated laboratory spaces and ample administrative and technical workspace for staff.

At A-level we follow the AQA syllabus. The results in recent years have been excellent, most notably achieving 98% A*-B, in 2024 and 50% A* in 2025.

Many pupils, each year, opt to go on to study psychology and psychology related degrees at top UK and international universities. Pupils are encouraged to engage in studying the subject beyond the curriculum, including the British Psychology Olympiad where the College has seen great achievements. Last year five Brighton College psychologists pupils progressed to the final round with two of them receiving ‘excellence’ awards and one winning the ‘bronze’ award.

Pupils engage in the annual reading trip at the end of year 12, undertaking their own research. Recent trips have included visiting the psychology department of Exeter University, and to the Bethlem Museum of the Mind, in London.

    Role Specification

The successful candidate will be expected to teach Psychology across the curriculum at A-level. We are looking for a candidate that is able to simultaneously inspire, stretch and support our pupils.

An ability to contribute towards the department's extension programme, the the co-curricular clubs aimed at the younger years and a willingness to support pupils with applications to leading universities (including Oxford and Cambridge), will be a distinct advantage.

Additionally, all teachers at Brighton College are expected to contribute to the school’s pastoral system, generally as a tutor in one of our 16 houses (of which six are boarding houses and ten are day).

There is also an expectation that all teachers will contribute to the cocurricular life of the school, through the extensive Games programme, and/or through the leadership of one of over 100 school societies.

Candidates are encouraged to point to interests and enthusiasms as part of their application. All staff have the opportunity to contribute to our Masterclass programme; this is a series of weekly lessons designed to celebrate the enjoyment of learning, focusing on an area of personal academic or cultural interest. These have included subjects such as Magical Realism, Cuisine and Culture and Great Debates in History.

All teachers joining Brighton will have the benefit of guidance by an experienced mentor, whose role it will be to provide support during their probationary period. Thereafter, all teachers are expected and supported to participate in continuous professional development, throughout their time at the College.
