Purpose of the Role:
As part of the Active in Barnsley partnership, the Physical Activity Officer will deliver inclusive and engaging programmes designed to increase physical activity levels, promote healthy lifestyles, and drive long-term behaviour change in Barnsley’s priority communities. This role will contribute to a dual delivery model that maximises reach, resilience, and responsiveness across the borough.
You’ll work collaboratively with local communities and stakeholders to co-produce activity opportunities and interventions that reflect local need, building strong relationships, trust, and momentum for change.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential
To have a strong focus on Teamwork
Minimum of one Level 2 qualification from a recognised National Governing Body (NGB) or
equivalent experience in a relevant field.
First Aid qualification (or willingness to obtain).
Safeguarding qualification (or willingness to obtain).
Understanding of safeguarding and GDPR policies and procedures.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
Experience, Qualifications & Training
Essential
Proven experience delivering community-based physical activity or health initiatives.
Understanding of health inequalities and barriers to physical activity in
underrepresented communities.
Strong communication and relationship-building skills with people from diverse backgrounds.
Knowledge of behaviour change principles and inclusive delivery.
Flexible approach to working hours (including occasional evenings/weekends) and travel.
Experience working with statutory bodies, funders, voluntary and community sector organisations.
Proven ability to identify local needs and design targeted programmes to address them.
Experience in writing monitoring and evaluation reports for funders or stakeholders.
Experience of line managing staff and/or volunteers.
Ability to work independently, take initiative, and lead key programme decisions.
Strong organisational, planning and record-keeping skills.
Ability to manage own workload, meet deadlines and deliver against set targets.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Flexible attitude to working, including availability for evenings and weekends when required.
Confident under pressure and adaptable to changing demands.
Desirable
Experience of working with people with long-term conditions or supporting targeted interventions.
Degree in a relevant field
Level 3 in Exercise Referral
Training or qualifications in Health & physical Activity
Level 2 Gym Instructor / L3 Personal Trainer
Experience designing and developing inclusive schemes of work. Experience monitoring and evaluating programmes, ideally using systems such as Salesforce.
Experience managing budgets and financial reporting.

Programme Delivery & Quality
Coordinate, manage, and deliver a range of Physical Activity and Health programmes to increase physical activity levels across adults in Barnsley.
Deliver regular, accessible weekly exercise & sport activations that promote participation, inclusion, and community wellbeing.
Lead targeted interventions (e.g. Fit Reds) supporting individuals to make lifestyle changes in areas like weight management, mental health, and social connection.
Deliver Specialist Programmes for People with Long-Term Health Conditions
Deliver adapted, supportive activity sessions that empower people to manage their health and improve their quality of life.
Create and sustain opportunities for ongoing engagement through both informal and structured activities embedded in local communities.
Leadership & Management
Line manage community coaches, volunteers, and staff, ensuring clear goals aligned with project and organisational objectives.
Support the Head of Department with budgeting, resource allocation, and financial management. Organise and support CPD events for inclusion staff.
Partnerships & Promotion
Develop and maintain strong relationships with Barnsley FC, local stakeholders, charities, and community organisations.
Work closely with Community Connectors, Physical Activity Officers, and local organisations to co-design and co-deliver solutions
Proactively promote Barnsley FC Community Trust to grow its impact and reach.
Monitoring & Reporting
Maintain accurate records, monitoring data, and reporting via systems such as Views/Salesforce. Contribute to impact reports, funding bids, and case studies that showcase programme effectiveness.
Support funding applications, project proposals, and sustainability planning.
Professional Standards
Comply with all Barnsley FC Community Trust policies and represent the organisation professionally.
Demonstrate strong administrative skills, including accurate record-keeping and timely, effective email communication.
Undertake relevant training and CPD to maintain and enhance role performance.
