Job Description

Occupational Therapist – Children and Young People

At MacIntyre Children's Homes and School, we have created something genuinely distinctive: a small, close-knit community in Wingrave where children and young people with complex needs live, learn and grow — often for the first time in an environment where they truly feel safe and understood.

Our school sits at the heart of the site, with two residential homes on the same grounds and two further homes nearby. Across these small homes, every child has their own personalised bedroom, their own key relationships with staff, and their own path forward. Learning doesn't stop at the school gates; it happens at home, in the community, through life skills, creative arts, physical activity and everything in between.

Following our most recent Ofsted inspection, our homes and school were rated Good. Inspectors particularly noted how our teams work alongside therapists to support children to communicate, make choices and express themselves.

Inspectors praised how staff value children's voices, use individualised communication aids, and work with therapists to help children express themselves and make choices about activities, room décor and meals — as well as the team's proactive approach to emotional wellbeing, calming strategies and understanding the reasons behind distress.

The role

This is where you come in. We are looking for an HCPC-registered Occupational Therapist to join our multidisciplinary Health and Therapy team — someone who wants to do genuinely specialist work rather than manage a distant caseload. You will be present in the places where these children actually live and learn, working alongside residential staff, teachers and families to embed therapy into daily routines in ways that create lasting change.

Your caseload will span young people with neurological differences, coordination challenges, sensory processing needs and attention and behavioural complexities. You will carry out specialist assessments — across self-care, development, sensory processing, and fine and gross motor skills — and translate complex findings into goals and programmes that the whole team around a child can use.

Day to day, you will:

  • Deliver individual and group interventions in therapy spaces, classrooms and homes
  • Develop measurable therapy goals and contribute to multidisciplinary care plans
  • Provide practical training, advice and guidance to residential and education staff
  • Lead and contribute to MDT meetings and transition planning
  • Offer clinical supervision and mentoring to therapy assistants and students
  • Contribute to service development, audit and quality improvement
  • Support the development and growth of the therapy service as we look to expand our reach across our community education team.

You will receive specialist training from MacIntyre along with a commitment to support you in your own continuing professional development and be part of a team that genuinely collaborates, celebrates progress and keeps raising its own standards.

Who we are looking for

Whether you are an experienced CYP OT or looking to deepen your specialist practice, we would love to hear from you. What matters most is that you are child-centred and clinically confident — someone who believes that every young person deserves to be heard, to feel capable, and to participate fully in their own life.

Please note, we are currently unable to offer sponsorship as we await further guidance from the Home Office. Applications requiring sponsorship cannot be considered at this time. We appreciate your understanding.

Who We Are

At MacIntyre Children’s Homes and School, we provide modern, supportive homes and an innovative learning environment for children and young people. Across six homes, each accommodating up to five young people in their own personalised bedrooms, our experienced staff and home managers ensure every child feels safe, valued and empowered.

Learning and development happen throughout the day - at home, at school, and in the community—through life skills, creative arts, physical activity, and community access. We focus on developing communication, functional skills, independence, and confidence, supporting children to participate fully in everyday life.

Following our recent Ofsted inspection, our homes and school were rated ‘Good’. Inspectors praised how staff value children’s voices, use individualised communication aids, and work with therapists to help children express themselves and make choices about activities, room décor, and meals. They also highlighted the team’s proactive approach to supporting emotional wellbeing, using calming strategies, reducing restrictions, and understanding the reasons behind distress.

We celebrate each child’s achievements and unique strengths, and our teams collaborate to meet new challenges, creating homes and learning spaces that are aspirational, safe, and supportive. You will receive specialist training, including in behaviour management and personal care, and be supported to make a real difference every day.
