Location:
Based primarily in Shrewsbury. Some travel to our Newtown and Telford offices as well as community venues around the region as required. There is the opportunity to work from home as appropriate.
Reports To: Chief Executive Officer
Responsible For: Grants and Projects Coordinator and future Services Team staff
Working Hours: Full time (37.5 hours) or four days per week (30 hours). Hours usually worked between 8am and 6pm Monday-Friday to meet the needs of the organisation. This role will include some evening and weekend work (time off in lieu given).
Main Purpose of the Role
To lead the development of Lingen Davies’ service provision, ensuring that our grant funded and commissioned services are meeting the needs of people affected by cancer in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, and Mid Wales.
To oversee the work of the Grants and Projects Coordinator, ensuring best practice in grant making. To source new projects via relationship building and to represent the charity on project groups for major grant funded work.
To be the lead contact for community-based service initiatives, including the Bins for Boys project.
To lead the development of the grant making and service delivery team, managing growth to meet the changing needs of our communities, in line with the Lingen Davies strategic plan. To identify and pursue opportunities for income generation through your work.
To work closely with the Head of Services (Cancer Awareness) to develop the overall Services team. To be an active part of the Heads of Department team, ensuring the overall smooth running of the charity and working with colleagues to achieve our shared objectives.
Key Tasks
Management
To form part of the Lingen Davies management team, alongside the CEO, COO and other Heads of Department (HODs).
To directly manage staff in the Services team, providing appropriate direction and support to allow them to discharge their duties effectively.
To provide management supervision to other team members in the absence of other HODs, and to take a shared responsibility for the overall running of the charity.
Grant Making and Commissioning
To maintain a strategic view of our grant making work, building relationships and positioning Lingen Davies as a partner of choice for the NHS and other public sector bodies, as well as voluntary and third sector organisations in the region.
• To interpret and report on potential projects to the Senior Management Team and/or Grants and Projects Committee.
To work with colleagues in fundraising to scope out projects and assess their likelihood of fundraising success, contributing to appeal planning and ensuring fundraising leads have the required information to promote a project to potential donors
• To lead on our commissioned work, making recommendations for service growth and development in line with community needs. Maintaining relationships with external stakeholders to ensure provision complements, not competes, with other service providers
To represent the charity on project working groups with external colleagues, for example those overseeing major funded capital projects
• To have oversight of grant making governance and due diligence, including grant agreements and monitoring, evaluation and impact reporting.
Service Provision
• To lead on the Bins for Boys project, with the aim of the project being fully operational and impactful across the region within two years
To recruit and train volunteers for the Bins for Boys project and other opportunities that may arise. To work with colleagues to ensure consistency of excellent support for volunteers across the charity
• To identify opportunities to develop our services offer, both for in-house delivery and partner-led projects.
Strategic Development
To work closely with the Head of Services (Cancer Awareness) to ensure both workstreams are coherent, complementary and provide a strong offer directly linked to our strategic objectives
To attend events and networking opportunities, able to act as the face of the charity, including delivery of presentations as needed, and to raise the charity profile across the region.
To maintain, and prioritise, an understanding of health inequalities in the context of our communities, ensuring this is a key consideration when making plans and recommendations for service developments
To maintain a strong understanding of the work being delivered by the LiveLife and cancer Champions team, allowing for cross-cover and the potential for closer alignment in future
To liaise with Communications colleagues to generate press and social media coverage to highlight our services, with news and updates from across the region.
• To work with the Operations team to develop use of CRM system and undertake/apply data analysis to support the effective delivery of services
• To work closely with colleagues to maximise opportunities for income generation, sponsorship and other opportunities.
To sensitively and confidently communicate with people affected by with cancer, their families and supporters, including those who may be bereaved, and other members of the public.
• To undertake any other duties commensurate with the responsibilities of the role.
Key relationships
• The post-holder will report to the CEO
The post-holder will hold line management responsibility for the Grants and Projects Coordinator, along with volunteers in the community.
The post-holder will work closely with other Heads of Department, particularly the Head of Services (Cancer Awareness).
• You will work routinely with colleagues across the charity.
• You will be the key point of contact for a number of external stakeholders.
You will work closely with members of the Grants and Projects Committee (sub-committee of the Board of Trustees)
Person Specification
Education
• Educated to A Level/NVQ Level 3 standard or be able to demonstrate
equivalent professional experience.
• A qualification in health or community engagement is desirable
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
• Experience of managing health and/or wellbeing provision
• Experience of managing grant funded projects
Experience of building strong working relationships and communicating with people from across the social spectrum
• Experience of supervising, managing and/or motivating staff and/or volunteers
• Experience of managing budgets
• Experience of networking, including being confident to open new :
Experience of commissioning, tendering or engaging with external partners to deliver projects
• Confident in communicating with external professional contacts, including clinical staff
• Ability to understand and communicate the details of complex projects and ideas
• Ability to identify and realise income generating opportunities
• Ability to deliver compelling presentations, and confident in public speaking
• Ability to work at times without direct supervision, managing multiple priorities
Confident with use of computer systems, ideally including experience of using a CRM database or similar.
