Blue Cross is one of the UK’s leading animal welfare organisations for animals. We are a charity that supports sick, injured, and homeless pets and care for more than 40,000 animals every year through our rehoming, veterinary and education programmes.

The help we offer includes veterinary treatment, finding loving new homes for pets, behavioural advice, support with pet bereavement and education for future generations.

More about the role

We offer a fantastic 18-month development programme for hardworking graduate vets, who are passionate about helping pets in need to live happy and healthy lives.

No two days are the same in our hospitals. We pride ourselves in providing a very high standard of care. Working in a busy and rewarding charity practice you will see a huge diversity of medical and surgical cases – perfect to enhance your learning and grow your knowledge and practical skills.

You will have the opportunity to manage your own clinical cases from start to finish and you will be working in hospital environments with access to an extensive range of diagnostic and surgical equipment as well as supportive and experienced colleagues. You will be primarily based at our Grimsby hospital, where you will join a team of veterinary surgeons and many experienced nurses, ACAs and auxiliary staff.

Throughout your placement you will receive expert support from our large team of vets. You will be line managed by a senior vet and have a dedicated VetGDP advisor during your time with us. Within this role you will:

  • Learn how to run your own consult list, seeing a wide variety of interesting cases
  • Learn how to manage a busy hospital caseload with training in inpatient care
  • Receive a tailored training plan in surgery and diagnostic procedures
  • Receive adequate training in emergency work, before being gradually introduced into our veterinary surgeons’ out-of-hours rota
  • Take an active role in our monthly team development days, where services are reduced to emergency-only, to allow for team meetings, cadaver training sessions and external lectures
  • Provide a much-appreciated service to pet owners in need

About you

You will be a practical, pragmatic individual who enjoys working in a team. With a strong work ethic and a caring approach to our patients and their owners you will be committed to delivering excellent customer care.
