Burghley Estate is a diverse business centred in the town of Stamford, Lincolnshire. At the heart of the Estate is Burghley House, set within 1,500 acres of historic Capability Brown parkland, with hundreds of heritage parkland trees. Our business interests are wide and varied including the House and Gardens visitor attractions and events, Burghley Park Golf Club, a significant property portfolio, including residential, agricultural and commercial properties.
Burghley owns around 1,000 acres of woodland, with extensive planting schemes underway, alongside long term woodland regeneration projects managed through a 10-year woodland management plan. Much of the Estate woodland falls under Countryside Stewardship and extensive on-going works are carried out annually to manage this scheme.
We are recruiting for a keen and hardworking Forester to join our Forestry Team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working outdoors and is looking to build a career in forestry, with training and development available for the right candidate. The candidate must be an excellent team player and be prepared to get involved in many different aspects of Estate life, including working alongside other Estate teams where necessary.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out a range of forestry and woodland management duties, including tree felling, processing, planting, and maintenance
- Undertake tree and parkland maintenance using chainsaws, strimmers, and brush cutters
- Assist with conservation and habitat management across the Estate
- Support wider estate maintenance tasks, including work on residential, agricultural, and commercial areas
- Assist with preparation of the park for events held throughout the year when required, including preparing the park for the Burghley Horse Trials
- Operate forestry and grounds maintenance machinery, including ATVs and other vehicles (dependent on experience)
Skills and Experience
- A genuine interest in forestry, woodland management, or arboriculture
- Practical, hands-on approach with the ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and alongside other trades
- Full UK driving licence
- Relevant qualifications such as CS30, 31 and 32, and PA1/PA6 pesticide certificates are desirable but not essential
- Previous forestry or arboriculture experience would be beneficial; however, we are keen to hear from candidates with the right attitude and willingness to learn.
Working Hours & Salary
- 39 hours per week, Monday to Friday
- Salary: £26,000–£29,000 per annum, depending on experience
- We are open to discussing salary for candidates with strong relevant skills or experience
