ABOUT THE ROLE:

The Technical Services department provides technical services across the Science Museum Group S outh, maintaining exhibits, mount making and providing AV services for public programmes. This role is a key part of the department as it continues to support the Science Museum to deliver an ambitious programme of activities and a high - quality visitor exp erience.

In this role , you will work with Museum colleagues and freelance technicians to deliver virtual, hybrid and on-site events for the public programmes team. You will also operate and maintain AV systems in key presentation and event spaces, such as the Wonderlab Show space and the newly refurbished Hans Rausing Lecture Theatre, and act as the first line of support for users of these spaces.

There will be a require ment to work some early mornings, evening s and weekend s, depending on r ole demands . You will be supported by the wider Technical Service team as required for larger events and for holiday cover.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

• Setup and operate a wide variety of event AV and IT equipment for visitor -facing and internal events, including lectures, conferences, theatre - style shows and live online events.

• Responding to incoming requests for AV services, liaising with colleagues on requirements and managing the diary of events to ensure they are delivered successfully.

• Technical integration of theatre style shows into our event spaces using QLab.

• Preparing and screening DCP Cinema content.

• Taking ownership of event spaces throughout the Museum, performing routine maintenance.

• Proposing, testing and installing upgrades where required.

• Support the Lead Event Technician in overseeing freelance and agency support staff and maintaining the rota.

• Supporting the wider department with day -to-day operation and maintenance of digital exhibits and assisting with the installation of a diverse range of digital systems.

• Keep effective documentation, including fault logging, asset management, as well as writing and maintaining comprehensive O&M documentation for event systems.

• Continuously demonstrate inclusive behaviours, valuing everyone’s contribution, and promoting a culture of openness .

You may be required to participate in SMG’s incident response and business continuity arrangements, helping us ensure the organisation’s preparedness and resilience.

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TEAM:

You will have:

• Experience of setting up and running AV systems, quickly, safely and effectively for events in a visitor - facing environment.

Experience of maintaining an AV environment, such as a conference centre or studio, and supporting with the use of these facilities .

• In-depth working knowledge of audio, video and lighting systems for event usage, including the use of digital sound desks, DMX -based lights and AV -over -IP technologies such as Dante and NDI.

• A high level of ICT literacy and experience working with Windows and Mac operating systems.

• Experience delivering virtual events using virtual vision mixing software, such as OBS or VMix.

Excellent communication skills to both technical and non -technical people and be able to deliver the highest standards of customer service. Be calm under pressure and able to deal with technical issues quickly and effectively during live events.

• A willingness to uphold high standards of health and safety practice and challenge those who do not conform to those levels.

It would be good i f you ha ve :

• Knowledge and experience of working with digital cinema systems and equipment.

• Experience using and programming QLab or similar live show control software.

• Experience maintaining simple networks, particularly to accommodate AV -over -IP usage.

• Knowledge and experience of working with and maintaining control systems such as Crestron or Q - SYS.

Hold a formal qualification, for example Infocomm CTS.

SOME THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW :

There will be evening work, as required, to support events or major out - of - hours jobs, as well as working up to one in three weekends and a share in Bank holidays.

• Occasional visits to other SMG sites, may be required to support group projects.
