Salary: £25,818 per annum
Hours: 37.5 hours per week (evenings & weekends required)
Contract: Permanent

About the Role

Tyne Theatre & Opera House is recruiting a Venue Technician to join our Technical Team at one of the UK’s most remarkable historic theatres.

This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled and enthusiastic theatre technician to support the delivery of a busy and diverse programme of live performance, events and community activity. Working across stage, sound, lighting and events operations, the role plays a vital part in ensuring productions are delivered safely, professionally and to a high technical standard.

The position reports to the Assistant Technical Manager and works closely with all departments across the theatre.

Built in 1867, Tyne Theatre & Opera House is a Grade I listed venue and an independent charitable organisation. We host professional touring productions, community performances, participation programmes and heritage activity, alongside preserving and showcasing our unique 19th‑century stage machinery.

Key Responsibilities

Event & Production Support

  • Assist with get‑ins, get‑outs and technical set‑ups for performances and events.
  • Operate sound and lighting systems during selected events.
  • Act as Duty Technician,working directly with visiting companies and promoters.
  • Coordinate technical equipment, suppliers and external hires.

Heritage & Volunteer Engagement

  • Support the theatre’s stage volunteer programme
  • Assist with heritage tours, open days and demonstrations of historic stage machinery
  • Help ensure safe and correct operation of heritage theatre systems (training provided)

Building & Technical Maintenance

  • Support routine maintenance across stage, backstage, front of house and plant areas
  • Identify and report maintenance issues and assist with repairs
  • Maintain technical equipment and ensure safe, organised working areas

Community & Participation Support

  • Oversee technical delivery in the 1867 Hall
  • Support technical requirements for Youth Theatre, Community Choir and Show Band
  • Ensure community sessions run safely and professionally

Person Specification

Essential

  • Knowledge of technical theatre equipment and practices
  • Strong communication and organisational skills
  • Ability to work independently and solve problems effectively
  • High attention to detail
  • Comfortable with manual handling and working at height

Desirable

  • Lighting, rigging or flying experience
  • First Aid qualification
  • IT / MS Office skills
  • Interest in arts and live entertainment

Working Pattern

This role requires flexibility, including evenings and weekends, in line with live performance schedules.
