Overview of the role

Murray Edwards College invites applications for the post of Tutor for Outreach and Recruitment (0.4 FTE). The ideal candidate will have experience of Cambridge (or Oxford) teaching and admissions processes and may also hold a part-time role within a University Department. The successful candidate will be considered for a College Fellowship.

The Tutor for Outreach and Recruitment will play a central role in developing and implementing the College’s strategy for outreach, student recruitment, and widening participation. The role leads on the planning and effective use of resources, including budgetary oversight within the Access and Student Recruitment (ASR) function, and works closely with the Senior Tutor, Directors of Admissions and ASR Manager to lead the successful delivery of programmes and initiatives.

The postholder is responsible for the development and implementation of outreach and recruitment strategy, including the identification of priorities, the setting of measurable objectives, and the evaluation of impact. They will draw on evidence and data to undertake strategic analysis of the College’s recruitment performance, and to develop and implement initiatives designed to attract a diverse and academically excellent pool of applicants.

Working in close collaboration with the Directors of Admissions, the Tutor for Outreach and Recruitment will ensure alignment between outreach activity and admissions priorities, contributing to a coherent and effective approach to student recruitment.

The postholder will act as a representative of the College in external engagement, including work with schools, teachers, sector organisations, and collaborative outreach programmes, and will contribute to strengthening the College’s profile and partnerships in this area.

The role requires close collaboration with colleagues across the College, including the Fellowship, Development Office, Operations team and Communications team, and engagement with relevant committees and governance structures. The Tutor for Outreach and Recruitment will contribute to reporting and forward planning, ensuring that outreach and recruitment activity is evidence-based, strategically aligned, and effectively delivered.

This role requires flexible working, including outside of standard hours and the ability to travel extensively within the UK and occasional international trips.

Strategic Leadership and Planning

• Lead the development and regular review of the College’s outreach and recruitment strategy, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities and admissions objectives.

• Establish clear priorities, targets, and measures of success for outreach and recruitment activity.

• Use data and sector intelligence to evaluate recruitment performance and inform strategic decisionmaking.

• Ensure outreach activity contributes effectively to the quality, quantity, and diversity of applications to the College.

• Act as budget holder for outreach and recruitment activity, overseeing allocation, monitoring, and reporting on resources.

• Provide strategic oversight of the Access and Student Recruitment function.

Line manage the ASR Manager, including setting objectives, monitoring performance, and supporting professional development; providing clear direction and oversight to ensure the effective planning, coordination, and consistent delivery of high-quality outreach and recruitment programmes aligned with College strategy.

Contribute to planning cycles and institutional reporting, ensuring activity is evidence-based and aligned with College priorities.

Undergraduate Outreach, Recruitment, and Engagement Activities

• Establish and maintain strong relationships with schools and colleges, teachers and HE advisers, and our partners organisations.

Represent the College through school visits, conferences, external events and established outreach programmes, acting as a senior ambassador.

• Develop, implement, and evaluate initiatives to encourage applications from underrepresented groups.

Oversee and contribute to the planning and delivery of major internal events such as open days, summer residential programmes.

• Work with the Fellowship to ensure appropriate academic engagement in outreach activities.

• Identify and develop new partnership opportunities that strengthen the College’s outreach portfolio.

Admissions

• Work closely with the Directors of Admissions to ensure alignment between outreach activity and admissions processes.

Assisting as required to the undergraduate admissions round.

Fundraising and Institutional Development

• Work with the Development Office to support fundraising initiatives related to outreach, access and recruitment, in line with College priorities.

• Contribute to the preparation of reports, cases for support, and donor communications as required.

Report on outreach and recruitment activity to College bodies, including annual reporting to the Education Committee and termly contributions to Directors of Studies meetings.

• Monitor and evaluate outreach activity using appropriate data and evidence, ensuring continuous improvement.

Prepare written reports for internal stakeholders, the Development Office, and College communications.
