Technician, Medicine, Medical Sciences & Nutrition (IMS322T)

Applications are invited for a full time Laboratory Research Technician to work with Dr Holly Spence at the School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition for a period of 27 months commencing 01 June 2026. The project will focus on the identification of subtypes of the neurodegenerative disease Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) through use of novel neuroimaging and multi-omic approaches.

Job Description

ALS is known to have several distinct subtypes, which limits the success of one-size-fits-all clinical trials. This project focuses on the oxidative stress subtype of ALS and aims to determine paired stratification and therapeutic strategies through Fast-Field Cycling (FFC) NMR and multi-omics approaches. Stratification strategies will be essential for future therapeutic success in ALS, offering more targeted therapeutic strategies and allowing treatment of the right person with the right drug at the right time.

The successful candidate will be based in the Institute of Medical Sciences which is situated on the University’s Medical School campus at Foresterhill, one of the largest health campuses in Europe. The IMS stands alongside the Rowett Institute, bringing together researchers from a wide range of disciplines including molecular biology, immunology, microbiology, developmental biology, neuroscience and cardiometabolic disease.

This post will involve conducting laboratory research and analyses required by Post Doctoral Research staff and will also provide the opportunity to develop skills and learn new experimental techniques. There will be a requirement to provide inductions and training for students and staff and maintain various equipment and laboratories. Work in a laboratory may involve working with various hazards, including chemical and biohazards.

Salary will be at the appropriate point on the Grade 5 scale, £33,002 – 36,636 per annum and negotiable with placement according to qualifications and experience.

Informal enquiries should be made to Dr Holly Spence (holly.spence1@abdn.ac.uk).

Prior to employment, the successful candidate must be able to demonstrate their right to work in the UK. This role may be eligible for a Global Talent Visa based on the UKRI Endorsed Funder route.

It is not eligible for sponsorship on a Skilled Worker visa.

Information on other visa options is available at https://www.gov.uk/check-uk-visa.
