Job description

Job Purpose

This post will provide in vivo technical support to facilitate the delivery of research objectives for a project investigating the role of creatine and homoarginine in cardiovascular health and disease. The position is based within the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health and will involve hands‑on support for laboratory‑based studies. The role will work closely with, and be supervised by, Dr Craig Lygate, on a programme grant funded by the British Heart Foundation.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Provide in-depth technical support and solutions for group members to ensure the delivery of research objectives under the instruction of senior staff members.

2.To maintain the group’s laboratory equipment, diagnose faults, and troubleshoot day-to-day problems relating to equipment, techniques, procedures, and protocols, carrying out appropriate repairs or maintenance as required.

3. Provide technical support in cell culture, molecular and biochemistry techniques.

4. Collect, analyse, and interpret data using standard procedures and ensure that accurate records are kept, databases are updated accordingly, and findings presented accurately.

5. Provide in vivo technical support including the generation of murine surgical models of heart failure and in vivo phenotyping e.g. echocardiography, haemodynamic measurements.

6. Management of transgenic mouse colonies including monitoring and welfare assessments in accordance with best practice.

7. To instruct, train and provide guidance to research staff and students in the techniques and operation of equipment and apparatus.

8. Contribute to a well organised laboratory, maintain appropriate stock levels, purchase consumables from approved suppliers within a defined budget.

9. In consultation with senior staff members, ensure the safe and efficient functioning of the lab space including ensuring safe storage of potentially hazardous materials.

10. Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the research group and School. This includes supporting the completion of risk assessments and COSHH assessments, ensuring that all Health and Safety paperwork is completed and policies adhered to as determined by the University and Health and Safety Executive

11. Keep up to date with advances in technology and apply this knowledge to technical activities to further research aims.

12. Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team meetings as required. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Principal Investigator or Head of School.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:

A1. SCQF Level 7 (Advanced Higher / Scottish vocational Qualification level 3, Higher National Certificate) in a relevant subject or equivalent technical experience in a similar role

A2. Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role.

A3. Up to date knowledge of relevant laboratory Health and Safety

Desirable:

B1. Home Office Personal Licence

B2. BSc or MSc in the Cardiovascular field or in vivo physiology

B3. Working towards Professional Registration (RSciTech/CBiol /CSci or other relevant registration)

Skills

Essential:

C1. Proven ability to learn and execute new laboratory techniques and operate specialised equipment.

C2. Excellent team working skills and willingness to engage with others.

C3. Proven interpersonal and communication skills.

C4. Strong attention to detail and ability to work methodically.

C5. Excellent organisational and time management skills and an ability to plan and prioritise workload to meet competing demands.

C6. IT skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office programmes and relevant databases.

Desirable

D1. Technical knowledge and skills relevant to in vivo murine physiology

D2. Skilled in rodent micro-surgery and/or imaging

D3. Knowledge and skilled in specialised laboratory techniques including cell culture and Biochemistry.

Experience

Essential:

E1. Significant relevant work experience within a similar environment, including evidence of previous professional development.

E2. Experience of understanding and interpreting the technical requirements of staff and students.

Desirable:

F1 Hands-on experience of working with rodents in a research environment.

F2. Experience in managing rodent breeding colonies.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 5, £28,031 - £31,236 per annum.

This post is full time (35 hours per week) and open ended with funding available up until 10th May 2031.
