Hours

This role requires approximately 10-20 hours per week across the academic year with flexibility to work evenings, late-night shifts, and weekends as and when required. A blend of in-person meetings and events and remote administrative work is required.

Your role

Under the direction of the Operations and Logistics Manager you will supervise Ents Staff, the staff technical department for events in St Andrews Students’ Association (the Union), working with other staff and volunteers to safely deliver lighting, sound and AV production for a variety of events held by the Union, its affiliated user groups, and external organisations. These events include club nights, live music, theatre productions, presentations, and more.

Your main duties will be to help deliver technical and production elements of the events programme, maintain equipment and create work rotas.

Extensive practical experience and very thorough knowledge of operating and maintaining lighting, sound, and video systems is essential, along with outstanding communication, teamworking, and problem-solving skills.

You will report to the Operations and Logistics Manager.

Description of specific duties

  • Design, rig, operate, and oversee lighting, sound, and video for a variety of events when required.
  • Act as a member of stage crew during get ins, performances, and get outs (including manual tasks like lifting and carrying equipment such as lighting fixtures and staging).
  • Carry out manual tasks including lifting and carrying equipment such as lighting fixtures and staging.
  • Act as a key contact point for user groups and clients working in Association venues and planning their events.
  • Work with the Operations and Logistics Manager on the upkeep of Association venues, scheduling appropriate preventative maintenance, and ensuring appropriate records of inventory and maintenance are kept.
  • Promote good housekeeping and keep the venues tidy and presentable.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of all relevant risk assessment and control measures to mitigate risks at work.
  • Ensure risk control measures are followed by volunteers and venue users, ceasing unsafe activities and dealing with non-compliance.
  • Solve problems quickly and efficiently, anticipating and preventing issues before they happen.
  • Continually develop relevant skills by staying connected to industry trends and developments.
  • Contribute to risk management within Union venues and represent the department when required at health and safety committee meetings.
  • Support other staff technicians and volunteers in their professional development.
  • Represent the department at interdepartmental planning meetings, helping with event scheduling.
  • Create staff shifts to ensure event preparation, event operation, and routine maintenance requirements are met.

Person specification

Essential Criteria – requirements without which a candidate would not be able to undertake the full remit of the role.  Applicants who have not clearly demonstrated in their application that they possess the essential requirements will normally be rejected at the short-listing stage. 

  • Experience working in a technical team across multiple disciplines, including designing and operating events and performing maintenance.
  • Experience leading teams and working with others.
  • Understanding of modern venue operation including selection and use of equipment, and operation and troubleshooting of analogue and digital data distribution methods.
  • Strong organisational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple events simultaneously.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience in working in a nightclub, live music, theatre, or student/community venue environment and delivering an excellent customer experience.

Desirable Criteria – requirements which would be useful for the candidate to hold.  When short listing, these criteria will be considered when more than one applicant meets the essential requirements.  

  • Production credits demonstrating expertise in technical disciplines or leadership.
  • Qualifications and certifications in relevant technical fields – for example technical training courses or health and safety certifications.
  • Experience working in a Students’ Union or other similar membership-led organisation.
