Key Purpose of the Job

Reporting to the Head of English, the Teacher of Drama and English will uphold and promote the aims and objectives of Beachborough School. The successful candidate will deliver outstanding teaching across English and Drama to pupils in Forms V to VIII, providing the highest standards of education and care in accordance with the school's aims, values, policies and procedures.

The successful candidate will take responsibility for leading the dramatic life of Beachborough School through the planning, direction and delivery of the school's annual productions, performance opportunities and dramatic enrichment programme. They will inspire pupils to develop confidence, creativity, communication skills and a lifelong appreciation of literature and the performing arts.

To carry out the professional duties of a teacher, having regard for the requirements laid down in the Contract of Employment, the values and mission statement of Beachborough School, and to implement policies as laid down by the Head and the Governing Body.

To be responsible for the education and welfare of the children under your care in accordance with our corporate responsibility for discipline, wellbeing, pastoral care and a strong culture of safeguarding, including Prevent Duty.

To demonstrate a secure knowledge and understanding of all areas covered in the Staff Handbook.

Main Activities

Communication and Collaboration

• To liaise and communicate regularly with the Head of English, senior leaders and colleagues.

• To work collaboratively with colleagues across all departments to support curriculum coherence and whole-school priorities.

• To communicate effectively with parents regarding pupils' academic progress, wellbeing and personal development.

• To contribute positively to the wider life of the school and represent Beachborough professionally at all times.

Teaching and Learning

• To be an exemplar of outstanding classroom practice.

• To be responsible for developing the Schemes of Work for Drama and liaising with Boardman (lower school) regarding Drama.

• To deliver inspiring and engaging English and Drama lessons across Forms V to VIII.

• To foster a love of literature, language, communication, creativity and performance.

• To ensure the effective implementation of Beachborough's Schemes of Work for English and Drama and remain up to date with developments in both subjects.

• To contribute to the review and development of schemes of work and curriculum resources.

• To teach pupils according to their individual educational needs, providing appropriate challenge, support and differentiation.

• To use a range of teaching strategies that promote creativity, collaboration, resilience and independent learning.

• To manage and deploy Teaching Assistants and Learning Support Assistants effectively to support learning.

• To set, mark and assess work in line with school policy, providing high-quality feedback that supports pupil progress.

• To monitor and assess pupils' progress using formative and summative assessment information to inform future planning.

To maintain accurate assessment records.

• To assess, record and report on pupils' attainment, progress and development in accordance with school policy.

• To prepare written reports to the highest standard and meet all published deadlines.

To prepare for and attend Parents' Evenings.

• To contribute to Common Entrance and Scholarship preparation where appropriate.

• To make effective use of digital technologies to enhance teaching and learning.

Drama

To lead and develop Drama across Forms V to VIII.

To direct the annual Form VIII Shakespeare Production.

• To direct the annual Form V, VI and VII Productions/Musical Productions alongside the Director of Music.

To organise rehearsals, including evening rehearsals where appropriate.

To plan auditions and casting.

To oversee scripts, costumes, props, staging and production resources.

• To work collaboratively with the Director of Music, technical staff and colleagues to deliver productions of the highest possible standard.

• To develop pupils' confidence, communication skills and creativity through performance.

• To provide opportunities for pupils to perform throughout the academic year through assemblies, showcases and enrichment activities.

• To promote Drama as an integral part of Beachborough's curriculum and cocurricular programme.

• To contribute to Open Mornings, Celebration Events and other occasions where performances showcase the school.

• To develop links with senior schools and external organisations where appropriate to enhance opportunities for pupils.

Professional Responsibilities

To ensure the school's Assessment Policy is implemented consistently.

• To take a full and active part in the Beachborough Performance Management process and demonstrate a strong commitment to continuing professional development.

• To contribute actively to inspection preparation and the implementation of the School Strategic Plan.

To organise intervention or enrichment opportunities where appropriate.

• To contribute positively to the promotion of English and Drama within the wider school community, including school publications and social media where appropriate.

Pastoral Responsibilities

• To promote the progress, wellbeing and personal development of individual pupils.

• In liaison with the SENDCo, to ensure that the needs of pupils with SEND are met effectively within the classroom environment.

• To support pupils at key transition points between year groups.

• To accompany pupils on trips and outings as necessary and complete all required risk assessments.

• To demonstrate flexibility and commitment in supporting pupils within Manor House.

Whole School Responsibilities

To work collaboratively as part of the wider school team.

• To contribute positively to whole-school priorities, including wellbeing, enrichment, inclusion and sustainability, where appropriate through the English curriculum.

• To contribute to the Co-Curricular Programme and Supra Curricular programmes.

To fulfil a fair and equitable share of duties and cover.

To participate fully in whole-school events including productions, performances, concerts, Open Mornings and Celebration Events.

• To act as a positive ambassador for Beachborough School at all times.

General Notes

If the post offered is full time, a discount of 50% is available for the children of the successful candidate at the discretion of the Governors. Part time teachers benefit pro rata.
