Reading Students’ Union hiring friendly, hard-working, and enthusiastic people to join our Summer Ball event. This role is available to current University of Reading students and offers work in our commercial outlets, including our busy Bar, Cafe, Kitchen and Merchandise shop.

Student Staff - Bars & Venues

Responsible to: 

  • Trading Operations Manager
  • Venue Managers
  • Deputy Venue Managers
  • Bar Supervisors
  • Bar Team Leads

Job Purpose:

To work across commercial areas within Reading Students’ Union at the annual Summer Ball event.
To serve customers and assist in the running of the commercial areas at Summer Ball
To undertake training in the commercial areas at Reading Students’ Union, to be suitably prepared to work at Summer Ball.

Main Duties:

Service of customers

  • To serve customers in a polite and friendly manner, displaying high standards of customer service at all times
  • To process and maintain accurate transaction records for all sales.

Preparation of products

  • To ensure all products (food and drink) are prepared to a high standard and to the specification provided in training, guidance and to the customers preference.

Stock Control and Cleaning

  • To ensure good stock rotation and advise management of any stock levels that are running low.
  • To maintain an excellent level of tidiness and cleanliness across all public and staff only areas, before, during and after opening hours.

Uphold Reading Students’ Union policies

  • To observe and work within Health and Safety guidance as outlined in training.
  • To uphold and promote the licensing objectives while conducting licensable activities.
  • To be flexible in your approach to work and willing to undertake other duties as required

Previous Experience

  • Experience in a customer service role
  • Experience of working within a team
  • Experience of making and serving drinks/food

Skills and Knowledge

  • Ability to multitask and prioritise

Hours of work:
Part-time role for student staff on a zero-hour contract.
This role is being recruited specifically to work on 13 June 2026, between 19:00 - 07:00.
Training shifts leading up to this shift will be required and will take place on Wednesday and Saturday evening in the weeks leading up to 13 June 2026.

If training and this shift are successful an opportunity may arise to continue to work at Reading Students’ Union in the 2026-27 academic year within our commercial student staff team.
