Overview

This is a 10-week internship opportunity for someone with a background in communications, through either education or experience, to build their skills and gain hands-on experience in a professional environment.

Based in our Fort Dauphin office, the intern will support the delivery of engaging, culturally relevant content that promotes SEEDs work across the Fort Dauphin District. Working closely with the Media and Communications Officer, the intern will help gather stories, conduct interviews, translate and adapt content into Malagasy and English, and support internal and external communications.

This role offers a valuable opportunity to develop your skills in media, storytelling, and advocacy while contributing to communications that genuinely reflect local voices and perspectives. Supervision and hands-on support will be provided throughout the 10 week internship, and a statement will be provided at the end of the internship detailing the skills and experienced gained during the internship.

An excellent understanding of English is required, and the application test and interview will be conducted in English.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Support the creation of engaging content (articles, photos, audio and videos) that promotes the organisation’s work.

  2. Visit project sites to collect materials and gather multimedia content, including conducting interviews with community members and project participants.

  3. Create and write social media, website and newsletter content with staff across all departments in line with SEED’s strategy

  4. Translate and adapt content between Malagasy and English.

  5. Support both internal and external communications efforts, including newsletters, reports, and social media.

  6. Help navigate sensitive topics with cultural awareness and respect.

  7. Act as a bridge between local communities and international audiences, supporting clear and accurate communication that reflects local voices and perspectives authentically.

  8. Work closely with the Communications team to implement communication strategies and campaigns.

  9. Develop skills in media, storytelling, and advocacy through hands-on experience.

  10. Ensure all of SEED’s policies and procedures are evident throughout the work of the department, including those for safeguarding, whistleblowing and anti-corruption, and undertake continual training to ensure these are promoted at all times

  11. Complete other ad-hoc tasks as required by the Senior Media and Communications Officer, International Operations Manager, or Director of Programmes and Operations to further the aims and work of the organisation.

Person Specification

Recent graduate in communications, journalism, international development, or a related field.

● Previous workplace experience in a communications, journalism, education, or community engagement role is strongly desired.

● Fluent in the Antanosy dialect of Malagasy.

Fluent in English - essential to be able to work with the wider international team in Madagascar and with remote colleagues.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

● Understanding of Anosy Regions cultural norms, values, and fomba, particularly in rural communities.

Demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to SEED’s ethos and approach and be a good ambassador for the organisation at all times

● Ability to build trust and communicate respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds.

Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with both local and international teams.

Interest in communications, storytelling, media, or advocacy, especially within a development or conservation context.

Willingness to travel frequently to remote project sites across the Anosy region.

Basic computer literacy (e.g., Microsoft Word, email, file organisation).

● Experience with photography, video, graphic design, or social media content creation.

Knowledge of issues affecting communities in Anosy, relating to education, health, environment, or livelihoods.
