Senior Research Assistant: EMC-META-CLOAK Project
Senior Research Assistant: EMC-META-CLOAK Project
Project Description:
This project aligns with the Airbus Endeavr Wales challenge by addressing electromagnetic (EM) scattering and low-observability through the development of advanced conformal metasurface absorbers. The aim is to deliver a predictive computational experimental framework for accurate modelling and validation of scattering from aircraft-relevant geometries. The project will develop a Python-based modelling tool integrated with full-wave EM simulation (CST/COMSOL), alongside the design and fabrication of conformal metasurface absorbers with controlled reflection and absorption characteristics. Experimental validation will be conducted using multi-angle anechoic chamber measurements. The outcome will be a validated methodology capable of distinguishing intrinsic device behaviour from measurement artefacts, supporting reliable absorber performance prediction and enabling practical deployment in aerospace applications.
You’ll play a key role in leading the way by:
- Developing a computationally efficient modelling framework using Python-based tools to simulate electromagnetic scattering from complex conformal geometries, enabling rapid analysis and scalable integration with advanced EM solvers.
- Contributing to the electromagnetic design and optimisation of arbitrary conformal metasurface structures using industry-standard simulation platforms such as CST Studio and/or COMSOL Multiphysics, followed by fabrication of demonstrator devices with controlled reflection-phase characteristics.
- Coordinating the preparation and execution of bistatic, multi-angle measurement campaigns within anechoic chamber environments, replicating realistic aircraft inspection scenarios and ensuring robust experimental protocols.
- Supporting the validation process by systematically comparing simulated and measured scattering responses, identifying discrepancies, and refining models to improve predictive accuracy.
- Applying on uncertainty quantification, sensitivity analysis, and methodological improvements to clearly distinguish intrinsic device-under-test (DUT) behaviour from measurement artefacts to ensure scientific rigour and reproducibility.
Impact of the Role, Key Deliverables, Priorities and Opportunities
- You’ll support the delivery of a validated computational experimental framework for predicting high-frequency scattering from conformal metasurface, directly contributing to advancements in low-observability technologies.
- You’ll contribute to the development of a functional conformal metasurface demonstrator, bridging the gap between theoretical EM design and real-world aerospace applications.
- You’ll coordinate cross-disciplinary integration between modelling, fabrication, and experimental validation, ensuring alignment across all project strands and timely delivery of milestones.
- You’ll advise on best practices in EM simulation, measurement validation, and data interpretation, strengthening the reliability and impact of project outcomes.
- You’ll inspire innovation by working at the intersection of computational electromagnetics, metamaterials, and aerospace engineering, gaining exposure to cutting-edge research and industry-relevant challenges.
- You’ll encourage knowledge exchange across academia and industry, contributing to the development of transferable methodologies and future collaborative opportunities.
- You’ll transform theoretical Metasurface concepts into experimentally validated technologies to enable practical deployment in aerospace and defence contexts.
What you’ll bring
With strong foundations in electromagnetics and computational modelling, you’ll be able to contribute to the development of predictive frameworks for analysing scattering from conformal structures. Your experience with simulation tools such as CST Studio or COMSOL Multiphysics, alongside programming skills in Python, will enable you to translate complex EM problems into efficient, validated models and actionable insights.
It’s not just about technical delivery, it’s about integration. Your ability to work across modelling, design, and experimental validation will allow you to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, supporting the translation of simulation into real-world demonstrators.
Additionally, you’ll:
- Have knowledge of electromagnetics, RF/microwave engineering, or related fields.
- Demonstrate experience in numerical modelling, simulation, and scientific programming like Python.
- Be familiar with EM simulation tools (e.g. CST, COMSOL) and interpreting simulation outputs.
- Have an understanding of experimental measurements or willingness to work in laboratory/anechoic environments.
- Hold or be working towards a degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related discipline.
