Job Description: Retail Assistant
Hours: 18 hr/week
Salary: NJC level 5-6 (£25,583 - £25,989) pro rata based on FTH of 36/wk
Contract: Permanent
Reporting to: Baby Bank & Corporate Relations Manager
Based at: Home-Start HOST’s Charity Shop (Hyde town centre)
Main purposes of the role
To assist the Shop Supervisor and provide a high-quality retail service in the shop
Our Charity shop has been open since November 2023, its main purpose is to generate funds to
support the work delivered by our baby bank. We also want to use this shop to raise our profile in
the local community and help to generate interest in volunteering opportunities within our other
projects. The shop is located in Hyde in Greater Manchester.
The role will work as part of a team on a rota to provide adequate cover at the charity shop.
Saturday shifts will be a regular part of the role.
Main responsibilities
In the charity shop
• Maintain stock generation & rotation, sort donated goods, research, price and recycle
items.
• Provide excellent customer service
• Cash handling and purchase/returns processing.
• Proactively promote Gift Aid in order to maximise contributions from donations.
• Support the Shop Supervisor in the day to day running of the shop, including opening and
closing of shop and cash handling.
• Assist the Supervisor in ensuring that all Home-Start HOST administrative
and financial procedures are followed including banking, cash register reconciliation,
weekly returns and volunteer records.
• Be responsible for all necessary tasks to manage the shop in the absence of the Supervisor.
• Maintain quality standards & consumer safety, including ensuring the shop premises remain
clean and tidy, and maintaining quality of merchandise displays.
• To complete weekly Health and Safety checks on site, and ongoing management of the shop
environment to ensure the health and safety of colleagues and customers
• To train and mentor volunteers, acting as a role model & ensuring standards of quality are
met.
• To provide cover at the charity’s other sites if the need arises.
