Research Analyst, Conflict, Security and Development Programme (CSDP)

The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) is a defence and security think tank that has a deep understanding of regional geopolitics and geo-economics in a global context. Its international researchers provide best-in-class, independent and impartial analysis and offer insights on strategic challenges and priorities to governments and the private sector. It is expert at bringing together national leaders and senior policymakers in foreign policy, defence and security; promoting dialogue; and facilitating effective and influential bilateral and multilateral consultations.
An opportunity has arisen in the London office for a Research Analyst to join the Conflict, Security and Development Programme.
- Provide research support in the annual production of the Armed Conflict Surveypublication. Write and co-write chapters where appropriate, publish blogs and social media pieces related to the ACS dissemination.
- Provide research support to senior researchers on issues relevant to the CSDP’s research strands.
- Write co-authored articles with research colleagues for external publication when appropriate.
- Liaise with the communications team, assisting in research and logistical preparation for media interviews.
- Provide research and logistical support to senior research colleagues in developing ideas for concept notes for research projects. Provide support in the drafting of fundraising proposals.
- Support the organisation of internal and external events. Researching topics and leading of logistical arrangements with speakers and participants, travel etc.
- A master’s degree in political economy, development studies, conflict studies, security or international relations preferred.
- Experience in policy-relevant research and publication on conflict/criminal economies, security, geopolitics and/or geo-economics.
- Quantitative skills and experience/willingness to work with both qualitative and quantitative research methods (including conducting interviews, desk and field research and using datasets on conflict and humanitarian indicators among others).
- Excellent command of spoken and written English. Fluent French is desirable.
- Direct experience and interest in Sub-Saharan Africa and related conflict dynamics desirable.
