Job description

Job Purpose

Reporting to the ARC Head of Operations, the postholder will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and development of the ARC’s podcast and video production studio.

The role will provide specialist technical expertise and creative support to enable researchers, students, and external partners to produce high-quality audio and video content for research communication, teaching, public engagement, and research activity.

The postholder will ensure the effective day-to-day operation of the studio, deliver user training and support, and contribute to the strategic development of the service to enhance the University’s profile and engagement impact.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Studio Operations and Maintenance

1. Operate, configure and maintain professional audio and video recording systems, including microphones, cameras, mixers, lighting, and associated software.

2. Ensure optimal audio and video quality across all studio sessions, recordings, and live broadcasts.

3. Undertake routine maintenance, testing, and upgrades of studio equipment, resolving technical issues promptly.

4 .Maintain accurate equipment inventories and oversee booking and scheduling systems.

5. Manage media storage, backup systems, and file delivery processes in line with University policies.

User Support and Training

1. Provide expert technical support to staff, students, and external users of the studio.

2. Design and deliver inductions and training on equipment use, production techniques, and health and safety.

3. Support users in planning and delivering recordings, ensuring professional and accessible outputs.

4. Develop and maintain user guidance materials and documentation.

Production and Creative Support

1. Record, edit, mix and master audio and video content using industry-standard tools.

2. Provide advice on creative and technical aspects including sound design, visual production, and accessibility (e.g. captions and transcripts).

3. Develop production templates, workflows, and standards to support recurring series and efficient delivery.

4. Ensure consistent quality and branding across outputs.

Collaboration and Service Development 

1. Work collaboratively with ARC communications, engagement, and research teams to grow the podcasting service.

2. Engage with academics and partners to scope projects, advising on feasibility, production planning, and creative direction.

3. Contribute to strategic initiatives and partnerships that enhance digital storytelling and research impact.

4. Monitor sector trends and emerging technologies, recommending improvements to maintain a state-of-the-art service.

5. Support development of sustainable service models, including contributing to usage planning and potential income generation.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:

A1 SCQF Level 8 (HND or equivalent) in Audio Engineering, Media Production, or related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

A2 Strong knowledge of professional audio/video recording systems, workflows, and studio environments.

A3 Understanding of media production processes including editing, storage, and distribution.

Desirable:

B1 Degree-level qualification in a relevant discipline.

B2 Knowledge of live streaming, multi-camera production, and digital distribution platforms.

B3 Awareness of accessibility, copyright, and data protection considerations in media production.

Skills

Essential:

C1 Proficiency in industry-standard audio and video production software.

C2 Strong organisational and time management skills with the ability to prioritise effectively.

C3 Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to support a diverse user base.

C4 Ability to design and deliver effective training and guidance.

C5 Strong technical problem-solving skills with attention to detail.

C6 Ability to contribute creative input to enhance production quality and storytelling.

Desirable:

D1 Creative interest in research communication and storytelling.

Experience

Essential:

E1 Experience in professional audio and/or video recording and production.

E2 Proven track record of delivering high-quality media outputs.

E3 Experience of supporting users or clients in a technical environment.

E4 Experience of building and maintaining effective working relationships.

Desirable:

F1 Experience in a university, research, or media production environment.

F2 Experience in developing or growing a technical service.

F3 Experience working with external partners or clients.

F4 Experience in live broadcasting or event production.

F5 Experience with live broadcasting tools (e.g. OBS).

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 6, £33,951 - £37,694 per annum, pro rata.

This post is part time (21 or 28 hours p/w) and fixed term for up to 12 months. There is no fixed shift pattern and flexibility will be required to meet the demands of the role. The successful person will agree shifts with the line manager for this vacancy.
