Job Introduction

Join us as our Obesity Alliance Cymru Officer at Diabetes UK.

Are you passionate about making a real difference to the health of people across Wales? We have an exciting opportunity for a driven and strategic individual to lead our efforts to tackle one of the most pressing public health challenges of our time.

About the Role

This is a pivotal moment for public health in Wales. Following the 2026 Senedd elections, a new Government has been elected with a clear mandate to prioritise prevention, including the appointment of Wales's first-ever Minister for Preventive Health. This is an opportunity to influence policy and strategy at the highest level, shaping the future of obesity prevention and treatment nationwide.

In this dynamic role, you'll be at the forefront of our efforts to tackle the growing number of people living with obesity and overweight in Wales. Working together with the coalition of charities and organisations, you will represent a collective voice with strong ambitions for change. With obesity linked to serious conditions, including type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, and cardiovascular disease, your work will have a direct and meaningful impact on the health and well-being of communities across Wales.

Why This Role Matters

Wales has some of the highest obesity rates in the UK, with nearly two-thirds of adults classified living with overweight or obese. The health consequences are profound; obesity significantly increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and at least 13 types of cancer. The impact extends beyond individual health, affecting quality of life and mental wellbeing, and placing enormous pressure on our NHS and social care services.

But there is hope. The election of a Government committed to prevention, backed by a dedicated Minister, signals a genuine willingness to take bold action. The coming months and years will see the development of new strategies, funding commitments, and legislative frameworks. Your work will help shape these decisions, ensuring they are evidence-based, effective, and centred on reducing health inequalities.

Join us and be a part of something truly transformative. Together, we can change the narrative around obesity, challenge stigma, shift the focus from individual blame to systemic solutions, and create a healthier, more equitable Wales.

For further information about the role please refer to the job description at the end of the page.

We have a friendly and inclusive working environment here at Diabetes UK and are proud of our hybrid approach which allows great flexibility in the way that we work. This means that you can balance your working time between home and the office, subject to the needs of your role.

With more people than ever living with diabetes and millions more at risk of developing type 2, our work has never been more needed. We make sure they get the care and support needed to live well with diabetes and avoid devastating complications.
