What We're Looking For
We are seeking an experienced Marine and Offshore Surveyor to join our growing South America team, supporting Lloyd's Register's expanding marine and offshore business across Brazil.
The position is client-facing and technical, ideal for a marine professional who thrives in demanding operational settings and values direct engagement with shipowners, operators, shipyards, flag administrations, and other maritime stakeholders. The selected candidate will be based in Santos and will support surveys on both domestic and foreign-flag vessels throughout Brazil, requiring frequent travel to ports nationwide.

The Role
Key Responsibilities
Survey Delivery & Technical Assurance
- Conduct classification and statutory surveys of ships and marine assets in accordance with Lloyd's Register Rules, international conventions, flag-state requirements, and applicable industry standards.
- Perform surveys during vessel operations, dry dockings, repairs, modifications, conversions, and new construction activities as required.
- Assess the condition of hull structures, machinery, equipment, and systems to verify compliance with classification and statutory requirements.
- Prepare accurate and timely survey reports, recommendations, and certification documentation.
Client Engagement & Technical Support
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with shipowners, operators, shipyards, flag administrations, and other industry stakeholders.
- Discuss survey findings and technical requirements with clients, providing practical recommendations and solutions where appropriate.
- Represent Lloyd's Register professionally while delivering a high standard of customer service.
- Support business development activities through effective client engagement and identification of service opportunities.
Operational Excellence
- Plan and manage survey activities efficiently while balancing multiple assignments and competing priorities.
- Travel extensively throughout Brazil to attend vessels and client locations as required.
- Maintain accurate records and ensure timely completion of administrative and technical deliverables.
- Support colleagues and contribute technical knowledge across the wider South America team when required.
Health, Safety & Quality
- Promote a positive safety culture and ensure all activities are conducted in accordance with Lloyd’s Register health, safety, and quality procedures.
- Identify and mitigate operational risks associated with survey activities.
- Maintain compliance with company policies, industry regulations, and local legal requirements.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and best-practice sharing across the organization.
What You Bring
Experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience within the marine industry.
- Solid background in ship surveys, ship repair, vessel operations, or related marine engineering activities.
- Previous experience attending vessel dry dockings is essential.
- Experience with shipyard new construction projects is highly desirable.
- Previous experience as an Owner’s Superintendent.
- Previous experience with an IACS Classification Society.
- Experience working with a Flag Administration.
- Experience within shipyards or marine repair facilities would be beneficial.
Technical Skills
- Sound knowledge of classification requirements, statutory regulations, and marine industry standards.
- Technical knowledge in existing ships and associated statutory requirements.
- Ability to assess technical issues, interpret regulations, and provide practical recommendations.
- Good report-writing and technical communication skills.
Qualifications
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or another relevant engineering discipline.
- Registration with the Brazilian Engineering Council (CREA) is required.
- Valid eligibility to work in Brazil.
Languages
- Fluency in Portuguese and English, both written and spoken.

Location & Travel
- Based in Santos, São Paulo, Brazil.
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively to all Brazilian ports.
- Flexibility to work overtime during weekdays and on weekends when operational requirements demand.
Qualifications
Candidates with the following will be viewed favorably:
- Previous Classification Society experience (including experience with other IACS members).
- Flag State surveyor or technical administration experience.
- Shipyard construction, repair, or project management experience.
- Offshore unit survey experience.
- Experience working with international vessel operators and foreign-flag vessels.
