The Biological Research Facility (BRF) supports all animal research at the Crick through our comprehensive animal care and use programme. The Biological Research Facility provides the Crick's laboratory animal resource and technical services. High quality multidisciplinary in-vivo and ex-vivo research support is at the heart of the BRF's philosophy and operations. The BRF is committed to improving animal welfare, scientific quality, care of staff and transparency for stakeholders. The BRF teams integrate husbandry of multiple species within a range of facilities, using state of the art technologies, via talented and skilled members of staff.
About the role
In this role, you will work as part of the Licencing and Compliance Team within the Biological Research Facility department.
The main part of your role, will be to make sure those working with animals and their licences comply with the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 (ASPA), the Home Office requirements and international best practice.
You'll manage a subset of project licences, including new applications and handling the processes within life span of projects. The role combines providing advice on rules and interpretation of ASPA and hands-on support around project licence delivery to a high standard.
You'll work mostly on their own with little supervision, regularly updating senior management, and working closely with scientists and other staff across the organisation.
What you will be doing
Typical activities in the role will include:
Managing the lifecycle of project licences, this role involves drafting, submitting and renewing applications to ensure they are completed to a high standard and within required timelines. It includes providing expert guidance to staff working with research animals on regulatory requirements, licence interpretation and maintaining compliance under ASPA. The position also requires overseeing project licences from start to finish, supporting colleagues in preparing documentation, and ensuring all aspects meet quality and regulatory expectations. In addition, it involves maintaining accurate licensing records and supporting regulatory reporting processes, including standard condition 18 reports, returns, retrospective reviews and assessments.
About you
You will have:

A degree qualification or equivalent experience in a related science field. *

An interest in biomedical research and a willingness to work with animals and develop knowledge and understanding of the research programs at the Crick, of the Crick’s objectives, policies, practices and aims.

Sound knowledge of ASPA 1986 and Home Office licensing requirements and good knowledge of the ethical requirements of research using live animals. *

Skilled interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain effective relationships with and provide authoritative advice to a range of internal & external stakeholders *

Ability to organise and prioritise own workload and multitask to meet defined and conflicting deadlines, fluctuations in function and resource availability to deliver the expected standards required working under minimum supervision. *

Ability to generate and maintain accurate records with an ability to analyse ambiguous data and concepts rigorously.
