Learning Support Specialist Job Advert
We are seeking to appoint a committed, organised, and student-centred Learning Support Specialist to join the Upper School team at St Catherine’s British School in Athens, Greece. The successful candidate will support students aged 11–18 in accessing the curriculum and participating fully in school life, working closely with teachers, pastoral leaders, and the Learning Support Department.
The successful candidate must be proficient in written and spoken English and eligible to work in Greece. A high school diploma and a university degree related to Special Educational Needs, Inclusive Education, Psychology, or a closely related field are essential for this role. Candidates should have previous experience working in Learning Support and supporting secondary-aged students within an educational setting. Experience in providing targeted academic and emotional support, implementing accommodations, and working collaboratively with teachers and families to support students with diverse learning needs will be considered a strong advantage. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong interpersonal and organisational skills, patience, flexibility, and a commitment to inclusive education practices. Learning Support Specialist Job Description
Reports to: Head of Learning Support / Deputy Head Academic
Type of contract: Permanent, Full-Time
Hours: 8:15am – 3:45pm which includes a 30-minute break, Monday - Friday inclusive
Place of Work: Upper School
Holidays: Term-time only
Position Overview:
The Learning Support Specialist works closely with teachers and the Learning Support Department to support students in the Upper School, enabling them to access the curriculum fully and develop confidence, independence, and effective learning habits. The role involves working with individual students and small groups across a range of subjects and age groups, supporting both academic progress and student wellbeing.
The successful candidate will demonstrate flexibility, initiative, professionalism, and a collaborative approach. They will contribute positively to the inclusive ethos of the school and maintain high standards of safeguarding, confidentiality, and pastoral care. This job description outlines the main responsibilities of the role but is not exhaustive. Duties may be amended from time to time in consultation with the postholder and line manager.
Main responsibilities:
Support students in lessons, individually and in small groups, under the direction of teachers and the Learning Support Department.
Assist students in accessing the curriculum across a range of subject areas and abilities.
Support students with organisation, study skills, time management, and independent learning strategies.
Deliver targeted interventions in areas such as literacy and numeracy based on individual student needs.
Assist with the supervision and delivery of alternative qualifications for students with learning needs (such as BTECs, ASDAN, Nebraska).
Help create a positive, inclusive, and purposeful learning environment.
Promote student confidence, resilience, engagement, and wellbeing.
Work collaboratively with teachers to support lesson delivery and student participation.
Provide feedback to teachers regarding student progress, engagement, and behaviour.
Support students with additional learning, emotional, or behavioural needs in line with individual support plans.
Encourage positive behaviour and uphold the school’s expectations and values.
Support students during assessments and examinations where appropriate and in accordance with access arrangements.
Supervise and support students during non-classroom activities, educational visits, or transitions around the school where required.
Build positive professional relationships with students, staff, and parents.
Attend meetings and training sessions as required.
Administrative duties:
Differentiate resources and prepare teaching material appropriate for student specific needs.
Support Head of Learning Support and KS3 Coordinator with administrative tasks.
Maintain accurate records where required and contribute to updating the Learning Support register.
Keep record of student learning support targets and their progress.
Provide feedback on student progress for report writing and parent updates.
Assist in maintaining an organised and supportive learning environment.
Undertake additional duties as directed by the Head of Learning Support or Deputy Head Academic.
