Last year, the new performing arts building opened in the heart of the College, ensuring that drama is at the very core of our future here. This wonderful facility consists of a state-of-the-art theatre, drama studio and rehearsal spaces. We are open to applicants who may wish to be considered for both the LAMDA Teacher and Director in Residence positions.
The new development has enhanced productions immeasurably, and the technical and design support for directors is unparalleled. As a recent reviewer from the National School Theatre Awards commented: ‘Brighton College has certainly set the bar sky high.’ With our key principles of participation and performance, we aim to inspire and encourage all pupils to involve themselves in plays and theatremaking. On stage or backstage, the opportunities are multitudinous.
The department produces an exciting array of productions each year: the Senior Production, Lower Sixth Production, Middle School Production, Year 9 Production, Year 8 Production, Year 7 Production. The department consists of three full-time members of teaching staff, a Drama PGAT, Director in Residence, four LAMDA teachers.
There are also a plethora of drama activities on offer, such as improvisation clubs, a young writers club, scholars workshops, theatre design clubs, and drama outreach with local schools run by the senior pupils. We also run multiple theatre trips and digital theatre screenings. This cocurricular programme is augmented by events such as the Young Playwrights’ Showcase, House Film, and the House Duologue Competition.
The LAMDA Teacher will:
• Teach and prepare pupils for LAMDA drama examinations (Acting, Devising, Mime and Verse
and Prose).
• Take responsibility for timetabling your lessons and organising teaching space.
• Be aware that if pupils are absent, they will forfeit the lesson but if the teacher or school is responsible for a missed lesson, i.e. trips, events, etc. it should be made up.
• Take responsibility for sourcing material and ensure that it is appropriate.
• Plan structured lessons which take into consideration the LAMDA Syllabus.
• Meet with line manager (Director of Drama) when appropriate.
• Liaise with the LAMDA team regarding examination entries and charges to parents (administration to be done by the Co-Curricular Administrator).
• Liaise with parents when necessary.
• Write LAMDA reports.Teaching and Learning
• Plan and deliver high-quality, engaging LAMDA lessons.
• Prepare pupils for graded examinations (LAMDA syllabus) and showcases.
• Differentiate instruction to accommodate varying levels of ability and learning needs.
• Encourage creativity, discipline, and confidence in all pupils.
• Promote safe and healthy dance practices in line with current standards.Administrative Duties
• Respond professionally and promptly to communications (emails, letters, and departmental documents).
• Maintain accurate registers and attendance records in addition to doing weekly scheduling of lessons based on the restrictions shared by the Visting Teacher Administrator.Assessment and Feedback
• Provide regular verbal and informal feedback to pupils to support progress.
• Monitor individual pupil development and identify support needs.
• Participate in the annual review process, including lesson observations and feedback collection.
