We’re looking for a friendly, proactive Kitchen Assistant to join our busy Community Café team. This is a hands-on role where you’ll help prepare and serve simple, high-quality meals while delivering excellent customer service to all café users.

You’ll play a key role in creating a welcoming environment, supporting volunteers, and ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of the café.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare and cook a range of meals (e.g. breakfasts, soups, salads, sandwiches, daily specials, desserts)
• Make and serve hot and cold drinks
• Take customer orders, handle payments, and operate the till
• Maintain a clean and tidy kitchen and service area, including washing dishes and clearing tables
• Support the smooth running of the café, including covering for the Café Manager when required
• Assist with stock control and ordering
• Provide friendly, helpful customer service to all visitors
• Support and work alongside volunteers
• Help deliver catering for events, buffets, and functions
• Follow food hygiene, allergen, and health & safety standards at all times
• Complete required documentation (e.g. cleaning schedules, stock sheets, cash handling)

About YouEssential

• Previous experience in catering and customer service
• Good numeracy skills and experience handling cash/tills
• Strong understanding of food hygiene and health & safety
• Excellent communication and customer service skills
• Ability to stay calm and organised in a busy environment
• A positive, “can-do” attitude with a team-focused approach

Desirable

• Food Hygiene Level 2 certification
• Emergency First Aid qualification
• Experience working with volunteers or within the community/charity sector
