The Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS England) is entering a pivotal phase of transformation, guided by a new strategic direction. This presents a significant opportunity within the Education function to better integrate education, training and innovation to shape the future of surgical education.
We are seeking to appoint two key roles: a Head of Education & Development and an Education Lead, who will work closely together within a newly configured structure.
The Head will operate at a senior leadership level, setting direction across education, technology and portfolio development. The Education Lead will bring specialist depth in pedagogy and learning design, translating strategic priorities into high-quality delivery.
These roles are critical to establishing a more integrated, future-focused model that combines educational insight, applied training and emerging technologies.

These roles sit within a newly configured Education function, designed to bring greater cohesion across education, technology and delivery:
Head of Education & Development
- Provide strategic leadership across the education function, working closely with the Director.
- Set direction across education, learning design, technology and portfolio development
- Lead integration of education and training into a cohesive model
- Oversee multiple workstreams, including education, technology and course portfolio delivery
- Work collaboratively within a senior leadership team, contributing to wider organisational priorities
Education Lead
- Act as the specialist authority for pedagogy, learning design and learning quality.
- Translate strategic direction into delivery through actionable plans and programmes.
- Lead on knowledge integration across the education department, ensuring insight informs delivery.
- Work closely with other functional leads to embed learning into the wider portfolio.
- Drive consistency, quality, and innovation in educational outputs.
- Develop an evidence-based future focus for education and course design.
Together, these roles combine strategic oversight with specialist depth, ensuring both direction and delivery are aligned.
We are seeking two complementary profiles with a shared commitment to collaboration, innovation and high-quality education:
For the Head of Education & Development, you will bring:
- Senior leadership experience, used to working closely with Directors.
- Proven ability to shape strategy and lead complex functions.
- Experience integrating multiple workstreams (e.g. education, training, technology).
- Understanding of future-facing learning models and digital innovation.
- A collaborative leadership style, with the ability to work across boundaries.
For the Education Lead, you will bring:
- Deep specialist expertise in pedagogy, learning design and learning and training spaces.
- Experience translating strategy into delivery through structured programmes.
- Strong understanding of learning quality and educational effectiveness.
- Ability to synthesise insight and apply it across teams and outputs.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills.
