Freelance Educator - Role Summary

The Holocaust Educational Trust is seeking dedicated and knowledgeable freelance Educators to deliver its Lessons from Auschwitz Project - a government-funded educational programme for post-16 students across the UK.

Educators are responsible for facilitating high-quality learning across the three core elements of the programme: an in-person Orientation Seminar, a one-day educational visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum in Poland, and an online Follow-Up Seminar. Full training and programme resources are provided.

This role offers a unique opportunity to work with young people from diverse backgrounds, support their engagement with the history of the Holocaust and explore its contemporary relevance.

Key Responsibilities

Facilitate engaging and sensitive educational sessions as part of the Lessons from Auschwitz Project.

Support students to:

o Learn about the history of the Holocaust and the role of camps such as Auschwitz-Birkenau.

o Consider the individuals whose lives were affected by the Holocaust.

o Reflect on the relevance of the Holocaust today and share their learning with others.

• Create an inclusive, respectful, and supportive learning environment.

Deliver programme content accurately, thoughtfully, and in line with the Trust’s pedagogy.

Work and act professionally as an employee and representative of the Holocaust Educational Trust.

Commitment

Freelance role, with a minimum commitment to work on two Lessons from Auschwitz Projects per year

• Willingness to travel within the UK and internationally (Poland)

• Availability to work some evenings and weekends

All Educators will be required:

• To sign a Freelance Educator Agreement alongside other HET policies on an annual basis.

Complete HET’s safeguarding training on an annual basis.

• Be able to show their eligibility to work in the UK without sponsorship.

• To undertake an Enhanced with Children Barred List Level DBS. Any Educators that work in Scotland will also be required to join the PVG scheme.

Essential Skills and Experience

Applicants must demonstrate:

• Teaching experience, preferably in a relevant subject and/or with young people.

Strong facilitation, presentation, or group-leading skills.

The ability to communicate complex and sensitive subject matter with clarity and empathy.

• A strong commitment to Holocaust education and the Trust’s mission and values.

• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport with young people.

• Reliability, professionalism, and the ability to work independently.

• Willingness and ability to travel, including international travel to Poland.

Desirable Skills and Experience

In-depth knowledge of Holocaust history and/or experience teaching sensitive or challenging topics.

Experience of working with post-16 learners.

• Knowledge of the UK statutory frameworks around safeguarding and how to apply it in practice.

• Confidence in using digital platforms such as Zoom and online learning tools.

• Familiarity with the Trust and engagement with our programmes.
