About The University
About The Role
The MACH1 research group at Swansea University works in close collaboration with UKAEA to develop structural steels for next-generation tokamak reactors, as part of the LIBRTI-funded NEURONE programme. We combine machine learning-driven alloy design with rapid lab-scale prototyping — capabilities directly aligned with priorities in the UKAEA Materials Roadmap 2.0. This 8-week summer internship offers an exciting hands-on opportunity at the cutting edge of fusion materials research. As the Prototyping Intern, you will physically manufacture and characterise prototype fusion steel alloys using our established lab-scale processing route, working alongside a Computational Design intern to bring their designs to life. The ideal candidate will have a materials science background and a practical, hands-on mindset. Laboratory experience is beneficial but not essential — full training is provided from day one. Main activities include:
- Calculating and weighing charge element compositions for casting
- Assisting with induction melting and casting operations
- Assisting with forging and rolling processes
- Performing heat treatments to achieve target microstructures
- Characterising microstructures using optical and electron microscopy
- Assessing mechanical properties through hardness measurements
You will be embedded in our active research group, with direct links to UKAEA and the wider fusion ecosystem, providing genuine insight into career pathways in this rapidly growing sector.
