About us

Our purpose is simple: to save lives at sea. 24 hours a day, every day, RNLI lifesavers are ready to launch to the rescue. We are looking for an Established mechanic and machinery operator to join our team of Fleet Staff Coxswains & Mechanics.

The Benefits

  • Salary Grade E (dependent on experience )
  • 26 days’ annual leave (plus Bank Holiday days)
  • Outstanding pension scheme
  • Life Insurance

About the role

This is not a Monday to Friday, 9-5 job, it requires flexibility, commitment, and dedication.

This job has many demands. You will be supporting the roll out of new equipment and asset changes through our implementation work in conjunction with training, together with a varied demand for coastal support as subject matter experts to our regional colleagues. You will also be required to support stations through processes of change and developing and trialling new boats and equipment in conjunction with our Engineering colleagues.

Sometimes short notice operational demands mean deployment anywhere in the UK and Ireland with 24 hours’ notice.

About you

You’ll need to be a natural leader with the charisma to motivate and maximise people’s potential as you’ll be working with many different crews and individuals in a multitude of circumstances and your RNLI experience will be pivotal in delivering a service culminating in the desired outcome for all concerned. This could be crew progression, training development, honest discussions when things are not going to plan, the possibilities are endless as is the scope of this role.

When the moment arises our lifesaving crews must be able to count on their lifeboats, that is where you play a vital part.

You will be passed out as a SLaRs driver and mechanic on at least one class of lifeboat.

Duties will require you to be involved in the safe passage and operation of lifeboats around the UK and RoI as required, ensuring that their equipment works to the highest order, and developing your passage crews to enable them to benefit from valuable time afloat. As you will be working remotely, you will need to able to create and maintain a network of available crew for passage work. Assistance is available in this respect, but it will be your responsibility to ensure the boats are manned accordingly within current policy guidelines.

You will also need to be happy talking to the people about the work of the RNLI as you could be the public face at national and local events such as boat shows, naming ceremonies and station activities.

This post requires a valid driving licence.

As this is a sea-going appointment, you will need to satisfy the Institution's medical and eyesight standards.

Safeguarding

The RNLI is committed to safeguarding; protecting a person’s health, wellbeing, and human rights, enabling them to live free from harm, abuse, and neglect. We expect all employees and volunteers to share this commitment and have a zero-tolerance approach. The suitability of all prospective employees and volunteers will be assessed during the recruitment process in line with this commitment. This will include relevant criminal record checks being carried out dependent on the eligibility of the role. (England & Wales; DBS check, Scotland; Disclosure Scotland PVG, Northern Ireland; Access NI, Republic of Ireland; Garda Vetting; International, International Child Protection Certificate process).

Diversity at the RNLI

We respect and value diversity of background, skills and perspectives within our teams, and consider it essential to help us deliver a world-class lifesaving service. We are an inclusive organisation and welcome applications from everyone. In addition to having the skills needed for the role, we also look for applicants who share our commitment to living our RNLI values (trustworthy, courageous, selfless, and dependable), and helping us work towards Our Vision: To save Every One.
