Picturehouse is looking for an experienced and creative Film Programmer
This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a passion for cinema and a strong understanding of the UK film landscape to help shape the programme across Picturehouse cinemas.
You’ll play a key role in selecting films, planning creative seasons and events, building relationships with distributors, and ensuring Picturehouse cinemas deliver engaging and commercially successful programmes. The role would suit someone with experience programming commercial cinemas, particularly within the arthouse, independent film, live broadcast, or alternative content sectors.
Working closely with cinema teams, distributors, marketing colleagues and external partners, you’ll combine commercial awareness with a genuine love of film to help create exceptional cinema experiences for Picturehouse audiences.
This is a permanent full-time position, primarily working Monday to Friday, although occasional evening and weekend work may be required.
What will you be doing?
- Programme films and events for designated cinemas, balancing commercial performance with diverse and engaging film schedules.
- Build strong relationships with distributors, negotiating film bookings and securing the best possible opportunities for your cinemas.
- Use box office performance, forecasting and audience insight to inform programming decisions and maximise results.
- Partner with cinema, marketing and design teams to deliver successful film releases, seasons and special events.
- Lead and support initiatives including accessible screenings, community programmes, festivals and Q&As that drive audience engagement.
- Stay on top of industry trends and identify opportunities to enhance the Picturehouse programme.
About you
- You will have experience (ideally 3 years) programming commercial cinemas and a strong understanding of the UK film release landscape, particularly arthouse and independent film.
- You will be commercially minded, with the ability to analyse box office performance, forecast results and make informed programming decisions.
- You will have excellent relationship-building skills and be confident working with distributors and a wide range of internal stakeholders.
- You will be highly organised, able to manage multiple priorities and work effectively to deadlines.
- You will have a passion for cinema, culture and the arts, with a genuine enthusiasm for creating great experiences for audiences.
- Experience of Vista (or a similar box office system), established distributor relationships and a film-related qualification would be advantageous.
