Female Student Worker

St Andrew the Great is seeking to appoint a godly Female Student Worker to work with undergraduate students in the heart of Cambridge. God has given us an amazing opportunity to be working with large numbers of undergraduate students from the University of Cambridge and Anglia Ruskin University. Over many years now, the aim of our student ministry has been to reach out into the city with the good news of Christ, and to disciple students, so that, at the end of their time in Cambridge, they might be sent out as godly, mature Christians who will serve our Saviour, His gospel and His people in various settings across the UK and around the world. Our vision as a church is “The Gospel to Cambridge, Gospel Workers to the World.”

Our church

St Andrew the Great (StAG) has a diverse congregation which reflects our location in Cambridge city centre. We mainly comprise four groups of people: families and city (Cambridge resident) members, internationals, undergraduates, and 20-30s. As a church, we depend upon God in prayer and put teaching the Bible at the heart of all we do as we believe it equips us with all we need in living for His glory. In the past 25 years, there have been three church “grafts” to other local parishes and, most recently, a church plant to Huntingdon in 2018. We are a member of ReNew, and the PCC has passed a resolution in line with the House of Bishops’ declaration and receives additional oversight from the Bishop of Ebbsfleet.

The Student Staff and team

The student staff team consists of the Curate or Associate Vicar for Students, a Female Senior Student Worker, and several male and female Student Workers. Student Workers are primarily supported financially by the Jesus Lane Trust.

There is also a ‘student team’ consisting of recent graduates and members of the wider church family who volunteer to run small-group Bible studies and meet one-to-one with students. Our Student Workers are involved in discipling both students and the student team.

About the role

The main responsibilities of a Female Student Worker:

Leading small group Bible studies and courses, training students and volunteer Bible study group leaders.

Teaching and co-teaching seminars and ‘student lunch’, leading reading weeks, and taking other opportunities as time allows.

Meeting up individually with female students and with the female student team, to read the Bible one-to-one, and to support, pray with and disciple them.

Responsibility for a ‘pastorate’ of about forty students and a team of about eight small group leaders, including writing leaders’ notes for Bible studies.

Supporting students in their evangelism, including meeting their friends and encouraging evangelistic initiatives, e.g. being linked with a college Christian Union group.

Responsibility for some practical aspects of the student work of St Andrew the Great, such as helping to co-ordinate the annual student getaway, organising Student Team training days, and overseeing production of publicity.

• Taking initiative to develop the student ministry.

Maintaining excellent standards in safeguarding.

• Participating in regular staff team activities, meetings and times of prayer

Whilst work amongst undergraduate students is a Student Worker’s main responsibility, the candidate will need to demonstrate a commitment to flexibility according to the wider needs of the church. The job description may necessitate revision over time as the needs of the role and the church change.

The role can also include:

Supervision of an intern

Broader administrative responsibilities

• Leading short-term mission trips

• Participation in leading services

Participation in one-off whole church events, including assisting in children’s or youth groups on an occasional basis (e.g. at our Church Day Away)

• There may be scope for increased responsibility according to prior experience.

We encourage Student Workers to continue their own personal development and training through reading and directed study. If you would like to consider combining this role with further training, e.g. Cornhill or similar, please ask at interview.
