Zero-hour contract from 13th July to 1st November 2026

Hourly rate: £13.46

As part of our partnership with Costa Rica, we are looking for a fixed term zero-hour Explainer and Tale Maker. This is a visitor facing role, delivering tours, and engagements in the Rainforest and Mediterranean Biomes.

Our Explainers continuously find interesting ways to inspire the visitor into understanding both Eden’s and our partner’s missions that connect Plants, People and the Planet.

The role of the Explainer and Tale Maker is to be an interactive and passionate member of the Eden team with skills in presentation and guiding. You will maximise opportunities to bring the Eden stories alive with well-researched talks and tours. Training of tours and

engagements will be given, to give you the ability to have a thorough knowledge of the plant stories and a clear understanding of the Eden Project.

The Eden Project each year, opens its doors to thousands of visitors and you will never hold two conversations in the same way. Engagement, Learning and Entertainment

Roles within the Engagement, Learning and Entertainment job family focus upon the Eden experience, providing activities, learning programs, encounters and events, which engage, inspire and entertain, thus enhancing individuals understanding, experience, skills and enjoyment.

The role of an Eden Explainer and Tale Maker is to inspire others with the Eden passion through great presentation and contemporary storytelling. They will set the highest example of visitor engagement and deliver a world class experience ensuring that the Eden mission, story and spirit is delivered at all times.

The Explainer and Tale Maker will be highly trained, interactive, creative and knowledgeable. They will develop and share their skills alongside other members of the team and ensure content is consistent.

The Eden Explainer and Tale Maker will constantly maximise opportunities to bring the biomes and outside gardens alive, with storylines developed by the interpretation team, through conversations, presentations, talks and interactions. They will deliver researched and verified guided tours, and aspire to lead private tours after 6 months experience in the team and at Eden. The range of their knowledge will give them the ability to be in the biomes for a minimum of an hour and half, having conversations and showcasing our plants and stories to multiple visitors.

They will have a thorough knowledge of Eden’s overall aims and ethos as well as the content of the guide book and exhibit storylines. They will also have a full knowledge of Eden’s Cornwall site, and a good knowledge and understanding of the new international projects.

Working with other Eden team members, they will ensure that everyone supports each other seamlessly and that the best possible visitor experience is delivered. Working succinctly with the team on planning and creating daily delivery of content. Mentoring, assisting and training less experienced colleagues.

The Explainer and Tale Maker will use innovative, interactive and creative delivery styles to enable visitors to see the World through a different lens, as an opportunity to nudge behavioral change and contribute to the transformational change the team continually aspires to deliver.

Occasional collaboration with external companies will be needed to deliver funded projects and programs, in order to maximize opportunities to interact with our visitor.

As a visible member of the Eden Team they will have an awareness of visitor H&S and welfare whilst on site.

Relevant training or qualification in an educational, environmental or presentation-based field to degree level or equivalent experience.

At least 3 years’ experience in public speaking either presentations, workshop demonstrations, tour guiding etc. Ability to deliver daily up-to-date creative talks, conversations and tours. A good rounded knowledge of current climate and environmental issues and solutions. Experience of managing large groups of people.

Make day to day decisions with the Explainer and Tale maker Manager and other team members to ensure that the daily delivery is seamless, well-advertised and consistent. Working with other Eden teams to create a succinct visitor experience that is varied and easily understood.

Self-motivated with the ability to work both reactively and pro-actively on your own and as a team. Have the vision and skills to work with team members to plan and schedule delivery on site in the most organised, streamlined and creative way possible, often to extremely tight deadlines.

Some mentorship for less experienced staff maybe required. Ensuring assets are well looked after and stored appropriately.

In order to effectively communicate with our visitors, they will need exemplary communication skills. Constantly maximising opportunities for quality interactions with visitors, using creative and up to date content and acting as an ambassador for the Eden Project, maintaining excellence in a world class environment. They will have the responsibility of managing groups of visitors on site and be directly involved in the visitors’ experience. They will also provide information, content and support to the wider Eden team.

This role is based in a visitor facing environment, including outdoors and both Biomes. Therefore, they must have the ability and stamina to work in different climates, some of which can be challenging. In order to meet operational site needs you will be required to work weekends and some evenings.
