Applications are invited for a part-time (21.75 hours per week), permanent Doctoral Training Programme Officer working in the Doctoral Academy based in the Research Office at Bangor University.

The postholder will:

  • provide support across the Doctoral Academy remit with a core focus on the training needs of the PGR community.
  • be responsible for the successful co-ordination and central administration of all the other Doctoral Training Programmes in Bangor University and the training needs of the PGR community as required.
  • provide dedicated support for the Celtic Crescent Creative Economy an AHRC Doctoral Focal Award (DFA) which brings together a consortium of universities committed to innovative research into the role of bilingual and rural communities in the creative economy.

Candidates should be educated to AS/A level standard (or equivalent) or have previous equivalent experience. Previous experience of working within an office /administrative environment, of organising meetings and minute taking and of undertaking a wide range of project administration, including financial support is essential.

The successful candidate will be expected to commence as soon as possible
The ability to communicate in Welsh is essential for this post.

This role will be located on campus at Bangor. Through our Dynamic Working framework, there will also be the option to spend some time working remotely (although remaining in the UK) to support work life balance, which will be discussed further with candidates at interview.

Overview

The Research & Enterprise Directorate (RED) brings together core strengths in research development and governance, including delivery of the Research Excellence Framework (REF), knowledge exchange activities, and impact. It also incorporates the Doctoral Academy, supporting the development of the next generation of researchers.

Working in partnership with business, skills, and commercial specialists from the Strategic Partnerships and Projects team, RED enables the research community to achieve transformational change. The Directorate supports research, innovation, and impact across all career stages—from postgraduate researchers to established academics—and plays a key role in delivering the Researcher Development Concordat and enhancing research culture.

By responding to the diverse needs of the research community and driving delivery of the university’s Research & Impact Strategy, this team of research professionals is central to achieving the university’s research ambitions.

Purpose of the Job

The postholder will provide support across the Doctoral Academy remit with a core focus on the training needs of the Post-graduate Research (PGR) community. This will involve working closely with the Researcher & PGR Development Manager and the Researcher & PGR Development Officer to ensure coordinated central support for all Doctoral Training Programmes (DTPs).

The role holder will be responsible for the successful co-ordination and central administration of all the other Doctoral Training Programmes in Bangor University and the training needs of the PGR community as required. This will involve working with academic leads of DTPs, other key Professional Services like the Student Services, and external partners in other universities and funding bodies (e.g. UKRI).

The postholder will provide dedicated support for the Celtic Crescent Creative Economy an AHRC Doctoral Focal Award (DFA) which brings together a consortium of universities committed to innovative research into the role of bilingual and rural communities in the creative economy. The Celtic Crecent is led by Bangor in partnership with Aberystwyth University, Falmouth University, the University of Aberdeen, Glasgow School of Art, the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and the University of South Wales. This DFA also includes 27 non-HEI partners working in the creative economy. These are a mix of creative businesses, arts organisations and incubators along with major stakeholders such as Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, Creative Kernow, and Bòrd na Gàidhlig.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work closely with the Researcher & PGR Development Manager and the Researcher & PGR Development officer to ensure coordinated central support for all Doctoral Training Programmes.
  • Work closely with the lead academic for the Celtic Crescent Creative Economy DFA, coordinating the project management within Bangor and with external universities and non-HE partners.
  • Act as the central point for all Professional Services supporting our PGR community.
  • Work with the Doctoral community within Bangor University (PGR researchers, academic DTP leads, academic supervisors, Dean and Directors of Postgraduate Research) to identify specific training needs and to ensure that these are addressed via Bangor University’s Doctoral Academy Training Programmes.
  • Lead on the collation, analysis and reporting of PGR data for external funder monitoring requirements for all of Bangor’s Doctoral Training Programmes and the PGR component for the university’s statutory data returns (HESA, REF).
  • Administer the collection and reporting of training needs analyses across all the Doctoral Training Programmes in Bangor.
  • Liaison with external organisations as required in relation to the Doctoral Training Programmes which includes the Doctoral Focal Awards.
  • Undertake administrative responsibilities in the team as appropriate.
  • Work in the team managing the Doctoral Academy web pages and social media presence, particularly in relation to the Doctoral Academy Training Programmes.
  • Provide training for PGRs as appropriate, and academics applying for Doctoral Programme funding.
  • Promote the Doctoral Academy and PGR opportunities within and beyond Bangor University e.g. Open Days.
  • Provide administrative support to the relevant committees and team meetings, organising meetings, drafting agendas, preparing papers, taking minutes and circulating as appropriate.
  • To be an active member of the Research Directorate, undertaking other duties and working collaboratively across the Directorate as required.

  • 2 AS Levels or 1 A level or NVQ level 4 in a relevant subject area (or equivalent) or equivalent relevant experience.
