The Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS England) is seeking a Director of Education to lead its education directorate through a period of transformation, innovation and growth.

This is a significant leadership role at the heart of the College’s Professional Development Services directorate, responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality surgical and dental education to members and the wider profession. The role brings together education and training to create a more integrated and future-focused offer, supported by technology and new approaches to learning.

Working closely with the Executive Director and wider leadership team, you will play a key role in shaping how the College evolves its education provision, balancing educational excellence with innovation, accessibility and long-term sustainability. This appointment sits within a wider programme to strengthen leadership capacity across education, training and assessment at the College.

The Director of Education will provide strategic and operational leadership to the education directorate, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, innovative and sustainable education provision.

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Leading the development and delivery of the College’s education strategy.
  • Bringing together education and training to create a more integrated offer.
  • Driving innovation in learning, including technology-enhanced education and the development of the College’s extended reality (XR) capability.
  • Ensuring educational excellence and quality across all programmes.
  • Leading and developing a multidisciplinary team and network of faculty.
  • Working closely with internal stakeholders, Council, and clinical leaders.
  • Contributing to income generation through education, working alongside business development colleagues.

This is a strategic leadership role, focused on setting direction, shaping capability and enabling teams to deliver at scale.

We are seeking an experienced and credible education leader with the ability to operate at director level within a complex, stakeholder-rich environment.

The successful candidate is likely to bring: 

  • Significant experience in leading professional or postgraduate education at scale.
  • A strong understanding of modern learning approaches, including digital and technology-enabled provision.
  • Proven ability to lead teams, drive performance and deliver change.
  • Confidence working with senior stakeholders, including boards, committees and subject matter experts.
  • The ability to balance educational quality with innovation and wider organisational priorities.

Our onsite Bjorn Saven Centre hosts more than 150 courses annually and features our Extended Reality Lab, which offers immersive 360° learning experiences. Through a network of over 150 regional and international centres, a further 500 courses are delivered to the same high standards, while our standalone digital learning, ranging from virtual classrooms to bite-sized modules, and our PGCert in Surgery reach around 2,000 learners.

We also quality assure external providers and support training through senior clinical fellowships and the MTI scheme. The Director of Education will have a central role in shaping and developing this offer, ensuring our programmes are strategically aligned, evidence-based and responsive to the evolving needs of the workforce.
