Waltham Forest Cinema Project is growing and is looking for a company director to join the team

This will initially be on a voluntary basis, but with the goal of becoming a source of paid employment as the company grows.

What is the role of director?

Waltham Forest Cinema Project is a Community Interest Company and has two main goals.

The first is short term: run regular (monthly or so) screenings to bring different sections of the community together. This helps build an audience for the eventual permanent space.

The second is longer term: actively looking for a space for a cinema, either a microcinema space (60–100 seats in a single screen) or a permanent 2–3 screen space. The directors’ roles primarily focus on these tasks as well as the many smaller tasks that underpin delivering these goals.

Is this role for me?

It’s for someone who:

• Cares deeply about Waltham Forest as a community
• Has experience bringing people together with events or in other contexts
• Is a community connector, ideally based in Waltham Forest
• Can see themselves playing a key role in launching a community venue in the next 1–3 years
• Has regular time available to contribute to the project (though there is flexibility and they recognise that other work and commitments will need to take priority at times). This is negotiable but a minimum of 7–14 hours a month, depending on tasks/capacity.
• Has people management skills as well as being personable
• Has a sense of fun and finds motivation in sharing culture with other people

Some areas that Waltham Forest Cinema Project are especially in need of help with are: property search and property assessment (e.g. is this a suitable location?); financial management; community outreach and consultation; and experience with generating start-up capital. None of these is essential to a successful application, but please do mention if you have experience with them.

Payment

On its path to becoming a professional and sustainable project, the Waltham Forest Cinema Project is currently a voluntary project. The events are all profitable to date, and the intention is to begin regularly paying directors at least the London Living Wage for their time in the near future.

Some things you DON’T need to be:

• Incredibly knowledgeable about film: there is plenty of this in the team already, though being passionate and curious about the difference film makes as culture is great
• Working in a culture job right now: there are many different skill bases, both professional and otherwise, that you could bring to this job.
• Deeply financially knowledgeable: although you will be joining as a company director and managing the company finances is a part of the work, Waltham Forest Cinema Project have a professional accounting firm to help prepare company accounts.

About the application process

Joining as a director of the company is about finding the correct fit for the next chapter of the organisation. Waltham Forest Cinema Project plans to shortlist and hold a series of more informal discussions with a wider variety of people before moving towards a more formal interview process.

Waltham Forest Cinema Project is a community project that looks to include everyone who lives and visits Waltham Forest. As a result, they would like to build a team that reflects the amazing diversity of people in the borough, especially members of the global majority and disabled people who are overall underrepresented in film exhibition jobs. This lived experience is an advantage to delivering on our aspirations. Waltham Forest Cinema Project don’t expect you to be a community representative, but please do mention where you feel lived experience would help you in our work.

Waltham Forest Cinema Project is a Community Interest Company which aims to open a community-led social enterprise independent cinema in the borough of Waltham Forest, one of the London boroughs with the fewest cinema screens. They show films regularly to help establish an audience for the future cinema, with a focus on films that help bring underserved communities together.
