Purpose of the post

The purpose of this post is to ensure that the many AI projects we plan and undertake using deep learning systems are aligned to the rapid advances in data management, model development, evaluation and validation that are evolving rapidly within the AI community and, now, also within biomedical/healthcare research groups. You would work closely with HDRUK’s general AI advisor (and others in HDRUK) as we: develop pilot projects (that stimulate activity); scope larger, impactful programmes; understand the emerging landscape of UK capabilities in this area; and build a world leading community in this focal area. This is an opportunity to contribute to UK data intensive healthcare in an exciting phase of its development, via technical activities that have impact across the UK healthcare system.

Main responsibilities

This role has strongly technical effects, but these are achieved through influence on design and planning of activities. It does not require hands-on system development, although experience in this is essential (see below). The key responsibilities (discharged through your technical advice) are to:

  • Assist in identifying key pilot projects for AI across the HDRUK landscape.
  • Assist in rollout of deep learning pipelines and tools.
  • Engage with technical aspects of programme development.
  • Deepen our understanding of the technical capabilities in the UK landscape.
  • Work with colleagues in data, regional and other sections of HDRUK.

Knowledge/Skills/Experience

The successful applicant will have:

  • An academic track record of research in deep learning applied to significant healthcare domains, recognised internationally.
  • A university position at professorial level (or the equivalent in a research institution).
  • Practical, personal experience of building deep learning systems in health-related settings.
  • Experience of working in the HDRUK research community, engaging with our national network of researchers.

It would also be desirable to have:

  • A track record of research in symbolic AI, complementing neural approaches.
  • Practical experience in management and federation of health-related data.

Eligibility

Candidates must:

• hold a substantive academic position at a UK university,

• have a contract of employment at their university that extends up to the end of the secondment period or beyond,

• have the written support of their university before applying (an institutional supporting letter will be required for the application)

Dimensions

  • This role is a secondment for 1 or 2 days per week to provide support in deep learning research.
  • Occasional travel may be required for the role as HDR UK activity takes place across the UK

Please note, as we are a UK-based organisation,  applicants must be living in, and eligible to work in, the UK. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.

We reserve the right to close this vacancy early if we receive sufficient applications for the role. Therefore, if you are interested, please submit your application as early as possible.

We politely request no contact from recruitment agencies or media sales. We do not accept speculative CVs from recruitment agencies nor accept the fees associated with them.
