Clinical Secretary

Location: Birmingham

Salary £26,750 - £34,000 per annum (depending on experience)

Hours: 37.5 hours per week

St Andrew’s Birmingham is a 125 bedded adult mental healthcare facility comprises of eight units that cover medium and low security for both Men and Women. Located in Stirchley, a vibrant area in South Birmingham, easily accessible by road networks and public transport

We seek a highly organised, professional Clinical Secretary to support our dedicated hospital team in delivering outstanding patient care.

About the Role 

As a Clinical Secretary, you will provide high quality administrative and clinical support within a fast-paced mental health hospital.

You will ensure patient records, communications, and clinical documentation are managed efficiently, accurately, and confidentially.

Working closely with clinicians, patients, external agencies, and colleagues, you will help ensure smooth daily operations.

What We Are Looking for Knowledge, Education, Skills: 

✔ Previous experience in medical or clinical administration

✔ Mental health experience (desirable)

✔ AMSPAR Level 3 Diploma in Medical Administration or equivalent

✔ Proficient in Microsoft Office and computer skills

✔ Strong typing and audio-typing skills

✔ Good understanding of medical terminology

✔ Excellent organisational and workload management skills

✔ Outstanding attention to detail

✔ A passion for delivering high standards of service

✔ Professional, empathetic, approachable manner

✔ Team oriented, collaborative attitude

✔ Willing to support, train, and mentor colleagues

✔ Committed to confidentiality, integrity, and professionalism

Experience Required: Ideally from backgrounds such as: 

  • Healthcare or clinical administration
  • Customer service
  • Medical reception or ward administration
  • Mental health services

You will also have: 

✔ Experience working collaboratively in teams

✔ Confidence managing shared workloads

✔ Ability to follow procedures while adapting to unexpected situations, especially when supporting patients and external agencies

Communication Skills: 

  • The successful candidate will demonstrate:
  • Excellent verbal and non-verbal communication
  • Compassionate and professional interaction with patients and staff
  • Confidence communicating at all organisational levels
  • Awareness of communication’s impact on diverse audiences

Leadership & Team Support: 

While not managing others directly, you will:

  • Support and guide less experienced team members
  • Promote a positive, collaborative team culture
  • Share knowledge and best practices

Confidentiality & Responsibility: 

You will be responsible for:

  • Maintaining confidentiality, security, and accuracy of patient records
  • Ensuring compliance with policies and standards
  • Handling sensitive information with discretion and integrity
