Job Description

Job Title: Boathouse Manager / Boatperson

Responsible to: Corpus’ Second Bursar with day-to-day liaison with the Captains and relevant officers of the five colleges (Corpus Christi, Girton, Newnham, Sidney Sussex, Wolfson) and their participating Boat Clubs.

Purpose of Job: Maintaining the boats, oars and associated equipment of the five participating colleges and ensuring that the boathouse is operated safely, kept orderly and secure.

Hours of Work: Full time – 37.5 hours per week with exact hours of work to be agreed and likely additional hours during peak season.

Duties and responsibilities:

1. Equipment and Maintenance

Maintain the serviceable condition of boats, oars, ergometers and associated boating equipment used by the participating colleges.

Carry out minor repairs and timely maintenance to fibreglass and carbon fibre craft and their fittings.

Rig boats as necessary and advise student officers and coaches on correct set-up, storage, handling, transport and equipment care.

Maintain workshop machinery, tools, stores and materials in a safe and orderly condition, ensuring that they are properly safeguarded, accounted for and only used by authorised persons.

Keep suitable records of repairs, servicing, inspections, equipment condition and works carried out for the participating colleges

Promote safe and correct use of boats, equipment and facilities, and provide regular guidance and briefings to rowers and student officers as required.

2. Boathouse Management

Keep the boathouse, hardstanding, accessways and immediate surroundings clean, tidy, secure and in good operational order, and report any repairs or works required.

Supervise use of the boathouse, workshop and associated equipment and ensure that unauthorised use does not take place.

Able to determine their own priorities without regular supervision.

Report, and where appropriate coordinate, repairs and maintenance required to the building, site and associated infrastructure.

Keep suitable records of repairs, maintenance, inspections, equipment condition and works carried out for the colleges.

Support participating colleges and Boat Club(s) in the safe, orderly and disciplined operation of the boathouse and shared equipment, dealing with users in a manner that is approachable, firm and patient.

Maintain and update relevant risk assessments, safety procedures and COSHH records for the boathouse and associated activities

Ensure that potential hazards are identified promptly and that appropriate corrective action is taken.

3. Finance and administration

Monitor spending within agreed budgets and identify cost-effective approaches to maintenance, repair and replacement.

Order consumables, replacement parts and equipment in accordance with agreed financial procedures and delegated authority.

Advise the participating colleges and relevant Boat Club officers on replacement cycles, equipment purchases and procurement priorities

Attend Boathouse Committee or equivalent meetings and provide operational, coaching and equipment advice as required.

4. Discretionary Activities

The following activities are to be arranged and paid for separately from the substantive contract for the Boathouse Manager role:

Boat movements - Trailering boats to competitions by arrangement with Boat Clubs.

Coaching - To be separately agreed with the relevant Boat Club(s), and dependent on the postholder’s qualifications, experience and availability.

5. General

Staff Health and Safety

They must be prepared to undertake any training provided in relation to health and safety or which is identified as necessary in relation to their work.
