Bereavement Support Volunteer with Children and Young People

Location: Crimple House, Harrogate, Thirsk (The Lambert) and the option to travel to local schools.

Hours: 3 hours per week (additional one hour per month for group supervision and another hour for training and CPD)

Just ‘B’ provides direct support to children, young people and their families living with bereavement. Bereavement Support Volunteers are integral in helping Just ‘B’ reach more children, young people and their families, at one of the most difficult times of their lives and we would like to welcome new members onto our team.

Just ’B’ offers a 12 week, programme run by experienced practitioners from the service in Harrogate and Thirsk. The course will support volunteers in developing their skills, knowledge and confidence in supporting families at an extremely difficult time in their lives.

Following completion of the training programme, Bereavement Support Volunteers will hold one to one support sessions with children and young people. Sessions are young person led, and volunteers will use a variety of tools and activities learnt in the training to encourage young people to talk, process their grief and receive support for their bereavement.

If you are seeking a stimulating and responsible role, are able to commit to a regular weekly volunteering position, then this could be the volunteer role for you!

What we are looking for:

  • An interest in supporting children and young people
  • Ability to be empathetic and reflective
  • Good communication skills
  • Basic IT skills
  • An understanding of Children and Young People safeguarding
  • Keen to learn new theories and direct workingwith children and young people
  • Able to volunteer with us for a minimum of one year.

Getting started:

  • Please complete our online application form.
  • Shortlisted applicants will be invited to a volunteer interview.
  • If you are successful at interview, you will be invited to attend our training course.
  • Part way through the course we will complete a DBS check before you can begin volunteering.
  • You will be required to attend a reflective meeting following the training, providing the opportunity to reflect on the issues raised/discussed during the training.
  • We will ask you to complete organisational mandatory training via our online training platform.
  • Additional ‘top-up’ training will be offered where appropriate.
