About
Basketball Head Coach – DFY Academy
DFY Academy is looking for an experienced and ambitious Basketball Head Coach to lead and grow our community basketball programme in Brent.
This is more than a weekly coaching role. The Head Coach will oversee the development of the basketball academy, deliver two weekly sessions and use flexible administration hours to help attract new players, strengthen local partnerships and prepare teams for competitive basketball.
Hours
Approximately six hours per week, consisting of:
- Two one-hour basketball sessions
- Up to four flexible administration and programme-development hours
The administration hours can be completed flexibly during the week and may increase as the programme grows.
Weekly Sessions
Monday
6.00pm–7.00pm
Ark Academy, Wembley Park, HA9 9JP
Thursday
6.00pm–7.00pm
Newman Catholic College, Harlesden
The Thursday session is a new programme launching in September 2026. DFY already operates a large football academy nearby, providing an established network of local schools, children and families from which to grow the basketball programme.
About the Programme
DFY Academy provides community basketball for children aged 5 to 15.
The Head Coach will initially coach alongside a Junior Coach, who will primarily support the younger children aged approximately 5 to 10. The Head Coach will take responsibility for the overall quality, structure and development of the programme, including supporting older and more advanced players.
As the teams develop, we want to register with appropriate basketball leagues, introduce competitive matches and become more involved in the wider basketball community.
Key Responsibilities
The role will include:
- Planning and delivering two structured weekly basketball sessions
- Leading player development across the academy
- Supporting and supervising the Junior Coach
- Creating a safe, positive and inclusive environment
- Developing clear pathways for beginners and more experienced players
- Supporting player recruitment and helping increase weekly attendance
- Building relationships with local schools, families and community organisations
- Promoting the new Thursday programme
- Supporting registers, parent communication and session updates
- Helping organise friendly matches, fixtures and competitions
- Preparing teams for future league registration
- Supporting the long-term development of DFY Academy Basketball
We Are Looking for Someone Who Has
- Strong basketball coaching experience
- A recognised basketball coaching qualification
- Experience coaching children and young people
- Experience within a club, school, academy or community setting
- Strong session-planning and player-development skills
- Excellent communication and behaviour-management skills
- The confidence to lead and support other coaches
- A reliable, positive and professional attitude
- An interest in helping build and grow a new basketball academy
- An Enhanced DBS certificate, or willingness to complete one

DFY Academy is part of DFY Sports, a charity using sport to level the playing field for children and young people.
We currently deliver football, basketball and other community sports programmes across Brent and the surrounding areas. Our ambition is to establish a strong and sustainable basketball academy that provides children with opportunities to develop their skills, confidence, teamwork and discipline.

Qualifications
Essential
- Recognised basketball coaching qualification
- Enhanced DBS certificate, or willingness to complete one
- Safeguarding Children qualification, or willingness to complete one
- Emergency First Aid qualification, or willingness to complete one
Desirable
- Basketball England coaching qualification
- Experience coaching or managing a basketball team
- Experience preparing teams for leagues, fixtures or competitions
- Additional qualifications in youth work, teaching, sport or physical activity
