Meet the incredible people behind the work we do at C40 Cities
What motivated you to work in the climate space, and how did you become involved with C40?
I started paying proper attention to climate breakdown in my early twenties when I studied abroad in Australia. I was struck by how 250 years of an imported European model of development had massively damaged this beautiful and fragile land, after thousands of years where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples had an exclusive presence. Worsening soil salinity, invasive species causing biodiversity collapse and extreme weather events felt more real, tangible and visible than in Europe, where we’re more removed from the natural world. All that while watching the COP15 Copenhagen Summit fail to achieve any meaningful progress!
That led me to specialise in environmental policy at university. After that, I inadvertently started to work on sustainable urbanisation policies and programmes, which I loved because, as an avid city explorer, it enabled me to combine two interests of mine. That’s when I discovered C40, and I promised myself I would work there one day.
I ended up working on clean energy policies for various non-governmental organisations for a while, focusing on accelerating the adoption of more decentralised and participatory renewable electricity solutions. My current role at C40 brings all of this together very nicely.
What’s an accomplishment that you are proud of in your work with C40?
One of my priorities since joining C40 has been to strengthen the role of cities in the global energy transition. They are often left out of conversations about the energy sector, despite the central role they play in bringing more decentralised energy systems on the grid, enabling demand-side flexibility or electrifying end uses. Cities are also more ambitious than national governments – so they need to be listened to.
I’m very proud of the C40 Renewable Energy Accelerator launched in 2021, through which I supported 15 cities in making commitments to lead the energy transition, committing to a very concrete list of actions such as deploying solar photovoltaics on their assets and accelerating the phasing-out of fossil fuels. I love that mayors are more and more vocal about the need for a just energy transition away from fossil fuels, using the evidence about the health impacts of coal and gas on city residents that our research team developed and vindicated by their own innovative actions to clean up grids.
On a different topic, I’m proud to be a member of the C40 LGBTQIA+ staff group, and I play a small role in making C40 a more inclusive workplace.
What upcoming initiatives is C40 working on that you are excited about?
A few things are cooking in the energy team that I’m super excited about. First, we will disseminate the groundbreaking work four C40 pilot cities have been doing through the 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy for Cities programme. This is a really innovative approach to decarbonising urban electricity systems that we will encourage other cities to explore.
I’m also excited to scale up the support we offer to African cities, including introducing new resources for South African cities to replace coal with renewable energy sources. The 2030 target for the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal of ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all is approaching, and we are not on track. This is a major climate justice issue that African cities can help to tackle.
Finally, we will be looking to fight the fossil fuel lobby by accelerating city actions that eliminate the need for coal and gas in our energy systems. Cities want to reduce their reliance on fossil gas for heating buildings, so we will work to ensure that they have the power, resources and skills they need to be able to do so. We’ve got some exciting new research coming out, so stay tuned.
How do you balance your personal and professional life?
Having a busy life outside of work helps me cope with the fact that the clock is ticking when it comes to climate change, which can feel very overwhelming.
I love living in London, where, in a single day, I can swim outside in my local pond, visit a Roman temple and see a musical in the West End. It’s perfect for someone like me who prefers to be average at everything rather than excelling at a few things! But this year, I will try to focus my energy more. First, I’ll find more time to improve my ceramic skills. This is one of the most calming activities I’ve ever tried, and I think clay is a great metaphor for how fluid and ever-changing life can be. Second, I’m going to enter a couple of triathlons to push myself to be outdoors running, cycling, and swimming as much as possible. And finally, I want to spend less time online; leaving one particular social media platform a couple of years ago was the best thing I’ve ever done for my mental health!
International Day of Clean Energy is on 26 January. What are you looking out for in the clean energy sector in 2024?
In 2023, renewable energy capacity grew at a record pace, driven by a handful of countries and regions, including China, the EU, the US, and Brazil. The COP28 target of tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030 is within reach – with a bit of extra work!
In 2024, I hope to see continued progress on that front and reach record levels of renewable deployment in new regions. New Just Energy Transitions Partnerships could help low- and middle-income countries experiencing rapid energy demand growth to do exactly that. Hopefully, more investments in grid infrastructure will materialise, and it will be interesting to see if offshore wind farms can pick up some momentum after a disappointing 2023 – several national auctions will hopefully yield some interesting results.
I think we will see more cities stepping up their work to decarbonise heating through bans on new gas connections, more stringent energy efficiency requirements, and accelerated retrofits. By phasing out fossil gas use, cities can make a significant dent in gas and oil revenues.
This year is said to be the biggest election year in history. It is almost certain this will lead to regulatory and policy environments less favourable to renewable deployment in at least a few countries. Having cities lead the way on the energy transition will be key to maintaining momentum and putting the world on a path to a climate-safe future.
Meet the incredible people behind the work we do at C40 Cities
What motivated you to work in the climate space, and how did you become involved with C40?
My journey into the climate space began with a background in civil engineering, a field where climate considerations are peripheral but have a profound impact. Having experienced droughts and water shortages and working in areas devastated by cyclone Idai in 2019 sharpened my focus on environmental equality and climate resilience. Since then, I have channelled expertise towards water and sanitation, particularly in African communities that are more vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. My transition to C40 in 2023 was driven by a desire to make a tangible difference, particularly in supporting African cities in water management and climate adaptation strategies.
What’s an accomplishment that you are proud of in your work with C40?
Since joining C40, my focus has been on elevating the importance of water management within the urban planning and resilience frameworks of African cities. The challenge of integrating climate-resilient water policies at a city level amidst broader continental and national dialogues has been a complex yet rewarding endeavour. I am particularly proud of the strides we’ve made in positioning water resilience as a critical agenda for city mayors, as evidenced by several African mayors endorsing C40’s recently launched Water Safe Cities Accelerator.
What upcoming initiatives is C40 working on that you are excited about?
I am looking forward to the forthcoming African Water Safe Cities Forum in Tshwane. This platform is particularly exciting as it represents a confluence of innovation, collaboration, and leadership in the water management sector. By introducing new water urban water management approaches and technologies to African city water leaders, the forum aims to spearhead transformative solutions and foster a community of practice that is sustainable and forward-thinking.
How do you balance your personal and professional life?
Living in Tshwane offers a unique blend of nature, adventure and cultures to explore. While there’s a lot more to discover, I am privileged to live near diverse spaces where I enjoy walks and hikes with my family. This not only provides a physical outlet, but also allows me to reconnect with my surroundings and recharge.
Once a year, the golf bug bites, seeking a few weeks of exploring courses in new corners of South Africa. The outdoors counterbalances professional demands, keeping me refreshed and inspired.
World Water Day is on 22 March; this year’s theme is “water for peace.” How do you believe water plays a role in fostering peace and resilience?
Water scarcity, exacerbated by climate change and rapid urbanisation, is a pressing challenge across Africa, often leading to heightened community tensions and protests over the resource’s allocation. Recently, we’ve also seen the increasing role of hydro-politics in fueling mass migration and international conflicts. Addressing water security through cooperative management can serve as a powerful vehicle for peace and resilience.
Initiatives aimed at improving water infrastructure mitigate conflict potential and enhance community well-being. By embracing inclusive and sustainable water management strategies, water is being transformed from a source of potential conflict into a foundation for cooperation and peace.

About The Global Covenant of Mayors For Climate & Energy
The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM or Global Covenant), is a global coalition of cities and local governments with a shared long-term vision of promoting and supporting voluntary action to combat climate change and move to a low-carbon, resilient society. The alliance unites and inspires its stakeholders to strengthen global climate coherence, accelerate the energy transition, and generate locally-tailored solutions for a common purpose: creating an inclusive, just, low-emission, and climate-resilient future for all.
Co-chaired by former New York City Mayor and UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Climate Ambition and Solutions, Michael R. Bloomberg, and European Commission Executive Vice-President for a Clean, Just and Competitive Transition, Teresa Ribera, and with the support of global and regional city networks, the Global Covenant of Mayors represents the strongest and clearest signal to national governments that cities are not only acting to stop the effects of climate change, they are leading and leading together. Mayors from across all global regions serve on the Board, and represent city networks, Regional Covenants and bring locally specific perspectives – ensuring that the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy is truly led by mayors.
C40 Cities is the fiscal sponsor of the Bloomberg Philanthropies funded parts of the Global Covenant of Mayors (GCoM). As the host organization, C40 provides financial, administrative, and operational services to GCoM. C40 and GCoM are working closely together on aligned programmes and areas of activity.
Position Description:
The Senior Manager, Data System Regions and Partnerships is a critical execution and coordination role supporting the global delivery, adoption, and impact of the AI-driven Data System and a coalition on cities, climate, and AI across the GCoM alliance (13,800+ signatories) and C40 cities.
Reporting directly to the Head of Data System Regions and Partnerships, this role is responsible for managing and operationalizing key workstreams related to regional engagement and partnership coordination. The Senior Manager will execute the Data System's regional rollout by coordinating engagement activities with all GCoM Regional and National Covenants and C40 regional teams, while simultaneously managing the day-to-day operations of the AI Coalition to translate city demands into viable product pathways.
A key function of this role is to facilitate partnerships with city networks, Data System developers, and data users to ensure the Data System is interoperable and user-friendly. This requires collaborating closely with the in-house development team to align technical solutions with strategic objectives and supporting regional teams in Data System testing, user requirement gathering, and the deployment of pilots.
The postholder is expected to collaborate and coordinate closely with a Data System Development team to help ensure that GCoM alliance partner needs are sufficiently met, as well as a broader agile team focused on Data System development, engagement, and delivery.
This role requires close engagement with Bloomberg Philanthropies, the European Commission, and various C40 and GCoM alliance teams to effectively catalyze city climate action.
Responsibilities:

- Support coalition-building by managing the implementation of partnership projects that futureproof reporting, impact analysis and accompanying visual storytelling, and action-oriented data for multi-level climate action across GCoM and C40.
- Manage day-to-day relationships with Data System development partners, working in concert with the in-house team to translate user requirements and ensure they are sufficiently met during development.
- Execute the implementation of the Data System rollout strategy in tandem with the in-house team, managing the technical delivery of all relevant reporting and AI-assisted components to support the shared vision for simpler, faster, and actionable data.
- Act as a primary technical liaison with the Data System development team to maintain a detailed, working understanding of Data System capabilities and help identify new opportunities.
- Lead day-to-day engagement with GCoM alliance partners, including members of the Strategic Advisory Committee, as well as co-funders Bloomberg Philanthropies and the European Commission, ensuring that their requirements can be met through Data System development.
- Track and manage ongoing partner feedback and engagement on an ongoing basis in close coordination with the Head, Data System Regions and Partnerships.
- Support the generation of knowledge products and communication mechanisms to disseminate this information
- Lead day-to-day engagement between Data System development partners and cross-sector stakeholders - including other levels of government, financial institutions, academia, business, and civil society - to identify opportunities to utilise, display, and manage the information produced through the Data System.
- Facilitate dialogue and partnership through a coalition positioned at the nexus of artificial intelligence (AI) and city climate action, building on insights from the 2024-25 AI x City Climate Action Hackathon and Forum. Specifically, the Senior Manager will act as the primary technical liaison for the coalition led by GCoM to convene a space among networks, companies, governments, and other institutions at the nexus of cities, climate, and emerging technologies, managing relationships with partners and institutions to drive practical implementation.
- Lead delivery, organization and logistics convenings with AI-relevant organizations, GCoM and C40 partners, and other stakeholders, with the aim to signal city demands for AI, demonstrate viable pathways to product development, and update the understanding of how innovative projects and actions can be operationalized.
- Provide targeted, adhoc support to the Data System regional engagement team - in coordination with the broader Data System engagement strategy - to engage GCoM signatories and C40 cities, facilitate Data System testing and user engagement, and guide the deployment of demonstrations and pilots from both the coalition and Data Portal for Cities exploration.
Person Specification:
- Proven experience in program and project management, including coordinating multi-disciplinary workstreams, managing consultants, and tracking project budgets.
- Proven ability to act as a key technical liaison between end-users (cities, practitioners) and developers, with a strong ability to translate user requirements into technical specifications.

- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to manage technical workstreams and report on progress clearly to senior leadership and external partners.
- Outstanding interpersonal and partnership management skills, with a proven ability to convene and engage effectively with partners from government, city networks, and the private sector.

- Strong problem-solving, interpersonal and strategic thinking capabilities coupled with an outcome/delivery-oriented approach.
- International experience, particularly working across different cultures, languages and time zones.
- Fluency in English essential; proficiency in at least one of French, Spanish, Portuguese, or Arabic preferred.

Background
C40 is a network of nearly 100 mayors of the world’s leading cities, who are working to deliver the urgent action needed right now to confront the climate crisis, and create a future where everyone, everywhere can thrive. Mayors of C40 cities are committed to using a science-based and people-focused approach to help the world limit global heating to 1.5°C and build healthy, equitable and resilient communities. Through a Global Green New Deal, mayors are working alongside a broad coalition of representatives from labour, business, the youth climate movement and civil society to go further and faster than ever before.
C40’s team of 400+ staff is based in offices in London, in New York, Johannesburg, Singapore, Delhi, Rio de Janeiro, Copenhagen, Beijing and Paris, and individual staff based across 25+ different locations.
The strategic direction of the organisation is determined by an elected Steering Committee of C40 mayors, which is chaired by Mayor Sadiq Khan of London and Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr of Freetown. Three-term Mayor of New York City Michael R. Bloomberg serves as President of the C40 Board of Directors, responsible for operational oversight. A regionally diverse management team, led by Executive Director Mark Watts, leads the day-to-day management of C40. C40’s two core strategic funders are Bloomberg Philanthropies and Realdania.
Our international staff work with the C40 network under the leadership of city governments to deliver this mission. Using a data-driven approach, our team identifies and promotes the exchange of proven programmes and policies developed by cities; provides world-class research, technical expertise and access to key partners to deliver new programmes and policies with cities; and communicates cities’ individual achievements and collective leadership.
Bloomberg, and Executive Vice President for the European Green Deal Maroš Šefčovič, and with the support of global and regional city networks, the Global Covenant of Mayors represents the strongest and clearest signal to national governments that cities are not only acting to stop the effects of climate change, they are leading and leading together. Mayors from across all global regions serve on the Board, and represent city networks, Regional Covenants and bring locally specific perspectives – ensuring that the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy is truly led by mayors.

Department Description
The Governance & Executive Engagement (GEE) team ensures that direction from the organisation’s leadership is operationalised effectively, working closely with C40’s Executive Director, Management Team, Steering Committee, Board, and key strategic partners. The newly expanded Priority Initiatives & Events (PIE) function sits within GEE and plays a critical cross-organisational role at the centre of C40 and GCoM’s most mission-critical work.
Position Description:
The Manager plays an integral role within the Priority Initiatives & Events (PIE) function, contributing to both governance for priority initiatives and the delivery of milestone events across C40 and GCoM. Working closely with Senior Managers and the Director, the Manager helps coordinate complex workstreams, maintain planning systems, and support cross-team collaboration to ensure smooth, consistent execution.
This is a highly collaborative role that requires strong organisation, clear communication, and the ability to bring steadiness and structure during fast-paced and high-pressure planning cycles.
Key responsibilities
Priority Initiatives & Governance
- Support the development and maintenance of project governance tools, trackers, timelines, and documentation.
- Manage day-to-day coordination of priority initiative workstreams, including meeting logistics, task tracking, and follow-up actions.
- Prepare or contribute to briefing materials, decision logs, risk updates, and other governance documentation.
- Liaise with cross-functional colleagues (diplomacy, comms, regional teams, fundraising, policy) to support alignment of plans and deliverables.
- Ensure documents, templates, and updates are saved and organised in relevant systems (Vault, trackers, shared drives).
Milestone Event Delivery
- Support planning and coordination for milestone events such as WMS, LCAW, U20, COP-related events, regional convenings, and leadership moments.
- Develop operational documents including schedules, deliverables trackers, staffing plans, and run-of-show support materials.
- Coordinate with host cities, vendors, production partners, and internal stakeholders to support event delivery.
- Support logistics across venue operations, accreditation, hospitality, interpretation, security, and VIP flow.
- Assist with budget tracking and reconciliation for assigned areas in collaboration with the full team.
- Provide onsite support and real-time problem-solving during events.
- Contribute to lessons learned and post-event documentation.
Cross-Organisational Collaboration
- Facilitate coordination across multiple teams and external partners to ensure priorities move forward on time.
- Maintain clear, proactive communication with internal colleagues across regions and functions.
- Model collaborative, inclusive working practices and support staff wellbeing during intensive delivery periods.
Core Operational Ownership
In addition to the cross-functional responsibilities listed above, the Manager will lead one core operational competency for the PIE function. This ownership helps anchor the team’s long-term systems building and ensures consistency across priority initiatives and milestone events.
While the Manager is the primary lead for this competency, all PIE roles remain flexible and are expected to support each other’s areas during peak delivery periods or as organisational needs evolve.
Core Competency: Travel Systems & Vendor Liaison
- Managing travel workflows and processes for milestone events (staff, mayoral delegations, speaker travel as applicable).
- Owning SOPs for travel requests, approvals, and documentation.
- Maintaining travel trackers and coordinating with Senior Managers on travel-related timelines and needs.
- Serving as PIE’s primary point of contact with the travel agency and related vendors.
- Supporting contract management, service escalation, and process improvement discussions with vendors.
- Providing guidance and tools to staff and delegations during high-volume travel periods.
- Coordinating with Finance and Operations to ensure alignment on budgets, policies, and reporting.
Person Specification:
- 3–5+ years experience in end-to-end event operations, project coordination, logistics, or cross-organisational support roles.
- Demonstrated experience managing complex workflows, operational processes, and on the ground event delivery.
- Strong organisational and multitasking skills; comfort working with timelines, trackers, and systems.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills; able to work effectively with diverse teams and external partners.
- Ability to stay calm, clear, and solutions-oriented in fast-paced or high-pressure environments.
- Experience with overall event logistics, vendor management, and program support is an asset.
- Commitment to equity, inclusion, and collaborative working practices.
