As we enter our next strategic phase, we are seeking an inspirational and experienced Director of People and Culture to lead the development of our people, governance and safeguarding strategies, to strengthen organisational culture, and to ensure the highest standards of governance across the charity.
The Director of People and Culture will provide visionary leadership for organisational strategy across the globe, people and culture strategy, organisational culture, and governance and safeguarding frameworks. This role will champion inclusion, wellbeing, and high-performance culture while ensuring strong governance, compliance, and risk management across the organisation’s activities. The role is a key member of the Executive Leadership Team and a trusted advisor to the CEO and Board of Trustees (Council). The postholder will also play a critical role in supporting and advising the People Committee, a sub-committee of Council and one of ZSL’s most senior governance forums, providing expert oversight of people, culture, reward, inclusion, and workforce-related risk.
The Director of People and Culture will have executive responsibility for ZSL’s People, Governance, Health and Safety and Safeguarding Teams.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership
- Work with CEO and Chair to build governance capability across all levels of the organisations including induction, development and ongoing learning, to ensure high standards of stewardship, effective challenge, and confidence in operating within a complex international NGO environment.
- Lead the development and execution of a long-term people strategy, aligned to ZSL’s mission and strategic goals. Provide expert guidance and strategic advice on a wide range of issues including employee relations, strategic workforce planning, organisational design, culture and change.
- Act as a strategic partner to the CEO, executive leadership team, Chair of Council and wider Council on all people related and cultural matters and governance.

- Provide strategic oversight of the People Teams including employee experience, reward and systems, organisational development, business partnering and advisory services, talent acquisition, succession planning and volunteering.

- Develop and design change management strategies that support ZSL as it implements its strategy and organisational plans and seeks to create and maintain its’ organisational capability.

The Supporter Contact team acts as the central point of contact for all supporter enquiries and as the gateway through which ZSL’s products and experiences are promoted, sold, and booked.

As an executive coordinator you will play a pivotal role in providing high-quality administrative, coordination, and operational support to a Director and nominated senior team members. Acting as a central point of coordination, you will support effective communication, project delivery, and general administration, helping translate strategic priorities into well-organised day-to-day operations. - Meeting Coordination and Governance Support: Prepare agendas, minutes, and action points for team, committee, and relevant board meetings, ensuring follow-up on agreed actions.
- Team Development and Onboarding: Assist with team development and effectiveness, including onboarding of new staff with induction plans, supporting internal communication, and contributing to the improvement of aligned financial administrative processes and systems.
- Governance and Compliance Support: Provide low-level governance support to senior leaders, including preparation of documentation for audits, compliance checks, and committee/board meetings if required.
We are looking for a skilled and dedicated Veterinary Officer to join our Wildlife Health Services team, delivering exceptional clinical care across both ZSL London and Whipsnade Conservation Zoos. The Veterinary Officer will support the delivery of clinical veterinary services by the Wildlife Health Services (WHS) team across both ZSL London and ZSL Whipsnade Conservation Zoos.
Reporting to the Veterinary Manager (VM), the Veterinary Officer (VO) will support the health and welfare of all animals in ZSL collections, predominantly as a clinician working at both zoos. The role will also represent ZSL as a centre of excellence in the veterinary care of zoo and wild animals.
Key responsibilities:
Clinical Care: Deliver high-standard veterinary care (preventive, diagnostic, treatment, disease surveillance, and post-mortems) at ZSL London and Whipsnade Zoos.
Cross-Team Collaboration: Work closely with curatorial, animal management, and wider teams to support animal health, welfare, and ZSL’s strategic goals.
Research & Publication: Lead, contribute to, and publish clinical research in peer-reviewed journals and other academic platforms to enhance ZSL’s profile.
Teaching & Mentorship: Assist with teaching and mentoring students (tracking, MSc, ECZM ZHM residents, etc.) through ZSL, the RVC, and partner institutions to build global wildlife health expertise.
Reporting & Records: Produce timely clinical, pathological, and welfare reports to enable informed decision-making and continuous care improvement.
We are seeking an experienced and driven project manager to lead the delivery of Transforming the Thames, a landmark seascape-scale habitat restoration initiative.
This ambitious, partnership-led project aims to restore the ecological health of the Greater Thames Estuary, creating a more resilient, connected, and thriving coastal environment. Co-created by a coalition of around 20 organisations, Transforming the Thames is entering its first 4.5-year delivery phase with $5 million in secured funding. The project directly contributes to ZSL’s global strategy, A Blueprint for Wildlife Recovery, which sets out our journey to 2030 and how we will restore nature, looking for answers through science and working with people to find solutions.
As Project Manager, you’ll play a key role in driving forward the first phase of this multi-habitat coastal restoration plan. You will work closely with the project steering group, delivery partners, the Science Lead, and ZSL’s Coastal Habitat Recovery Team to ensure coordination and progress across workstreams. The role includes managing a large, complex budget, overseeing up to three direct reports, and commissioning specialist work from external organisations. This is a fantastic opportunity to shape a pioneering conservation project with long-term, landscape-level impact.
This position is a fixed-term contract, requiring 22.5 hours of work per week over three days. The pro-rata salary is between £22,388.70 and £25,380 per annum.
Project Oversight: Oversee project deliverables, keeping the project and partners to task, within budget and timelines.
Partner Engagement: Liaise with project partners, fostering good relationships and work with them to continue seascape planning for subsequent phases of the project.
Project Promotion & Advocacy: Actively promote and communicate about the project and its objectives to a range of audiences including project partners, stakeholders, local community groups and scientific conferences.
Communications Strategy: Develop communications plan with the ZSL Communications team, including press releases, social media and video production.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure the project complies with relevant environmental laws, regulations, and best practices.
Budget Management: Manage a large and complex budget ($5 million) and liaison with project funders.
Team Leadership: Provide guidance and support for up to three direct reports to achieve project goals.
