Macular disease is the biggest cause of sight loss in the UK, with around 300 people diagnosed every day. The Macular Society is the only charity determined to beat the fear and isolation of macular disease with world class research, and the best advice and support.
To support people affected by macular disease now, the Macular Society provides a range of support, information and services. Our research programme is focused on finding new treatments and a cure to Beat Macular Disease forever.
Become a trustee
We’re on the hunt for new trustees to join our Board.
Our trustees are responsible for setting our long-term organisational strategy and ensuring that we’re well-run and works as effectively as possible.
If you share our mission to Beat Macular Disease, we’d love to hear from you.
In particular, we’re looking for candidates who have skills and experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Lived experience of macular disease, including as a family member of carer of someone with macular disease
- Senior leadership experience in a complex organisation, ideally within the health or charity sectors
- Experience as an eye health professional
- Experience in risk management, governance or safeguarding
We’re interested to hear from applicants from a wide variety of backgrounds, who’ll bring a wealth of expertise and experience to the Board.

About the role
We’re looking for someone who can lead on community engagement across Wales – helping to grow and strengthen our local peer support services. You’ll work collaboratively with colleagues and volunteers, develop partnerships, and help us reach more people affected by macular disease. You’ll need to be organised, adaptable, and confident managing multiple projects at once.
As our community engagement manager for Wales, you will:
- Support the development of local community-based support and peer networks, ensuring they have the resources, guidance and structure needed to thrive.
- Lead and coordinate community engagement within the allocated nation, ensuring that local insight and community needs inform national approaches.
- Support volunteers, working closely with the volunteer and group support team to ensure they are engaged, informed and confident in their roles.
- Engage, build, and nurture relations with key stakeholders and influencers at both a regional and national level to ensure that macular disease is a strategic priority
- Facilitate face-to-face volunteer networking events in Wales.
About you
Our ideal candidate will have:
- Experience in service delivery and management of budgets.
- A strong understanding of the context in the nation being supported, and how this shapes the experiences of groups and volunteers.
- Ability to gather insight from communities and contribute this to team-wide learning and strategic planning.
- Experience of providing information in various formats – print/digital.
- An understanding/willingness to develop an understanding of macular disease and the impact of macular disease on both those diagnosed and those caring.

About the role
We’re looking for an experienced and strategic individual to lead our community engagement work in Northern Ireland (NI) and manage our UK-wide team of community engagement managers. You’ll oversee peer support development, build strong partnerships, and ensure consistent delivery across regions. This role requires excellent leadership skills, the ability to manage complex relationships, and a strong understanding of how to engage and empower communities.
As our senior community engagement manager for NI, you will:
- Provide oversight and strategic direction for peer support in own country, supporting the team to do the same in their nations.
- Ensuring they have the resources, guidance and structure needed to thrive and remain sustainable.
- Work with the community engagement managers to develop and test new models of community-based support for people living with macular disease.
- Support the engagement and development of volunteers through effective coordination, including proposing and implementing new volunteer roles in partnership with the volunteer and group support team.
- Identify, engage, build, and nurture relations with key stakeholders and influencers at a strategic level nationally to ensure that macular disease is a priority.
- Facilitate volunteer events, including leading the planning and facilitation of volunteer development day in one's own country, and support the wider team to do this in the other nations.
About you
Our ideal candidate will have:
- Experience in service delivery and the effective management of budgets.
- A credible and confident senior professional with strong influencing skills and a practical, hands-on approach.
- Experienced and supportive line manager with a development-focused approach.
- Deep insight into the communities and nations in NI, with an understanding of how national dynamics shape volunteer experience.
- A proactive approach to staying informed about trends, challenges, and opportunities across the community network, using insight to support strategic decisions.
- A commitment to building your team’s knowledge and sharing learning across the organisation to inform and improve our work.

About the role
We’re seeking a creative and organised individual to lead on communications and learning for our volunteer network. You’ll be responsible for developing engaging content, coordinating volunteer newsletters, and supporting the delivery of training and learning resources across a wide range of roles. This role requires excellent written and verbal communication skills, a keen eye for detail, and a collaborative approach to ensure volunteers feel informed, supported, and connected.
As our volunteer communication and learning officer, you will:
- Be responsible for developing, designing and implementing a range of communication, engagement and learning content, using a blend of approaches including emails, webinars, web content, videos and audio resources.
- Work with the community development manager and other relevant colleagues to ensure learning content supports the broader volunteer development strategy and reflects evolving volunteer roles.
- Be responsible for ensuring all content meets the needs of volunteers and helps to inspire, motivate and enable our volunteers to succeed in their roles.
- Partner with colleagues and topic specialists across the organisation to understand changes impacting volunteers, and successfully communicate these to them.
- Be responsible for involving volunteers in the coproduction of resources, ensuring that they are central to the planning process.
- Be responsible for volunteer communications, scheduling, collating, writing and editing content, managing distribution (working closely with the engagement team).
About you
Our ideal candidate will have:
- Experience of writing and editing copy to inform and inspire within a communication or customer relations environment.
- An understanding of volunteers and volunteering, and how to successfully work alongside a diverse volunteer network.
- Familiarity with volunteer management, community engagement, or peer support models.
- Ability to listen to and act on volunteer feedback to continuously improve materials and sessions.
- Awareness of accessibility needs in communication and training design.
