Student Placement Role Profile Role Title: Student Placement (non-clinical). Reporting to: Services Team Supervisors. Where will you be based: Hybrid – Home & Outreach Services/ Mobile Clinic (East London, subject to change). Commitment requirements: 25 days (Monday to Friday) spread over 5, 6 or 8 weeks + 1 day. Student Placement volunteers are the main point of contact for patients who call our advice line and visit our Outreach Services & Mobile Clinic. They carry out interviews to determine peoples’ needs and provide appropriate advice and support. They act as advocates and liaise with NHS service providers to link our patients to the care they need. What you will be doing • You will be the first point of contact for patients in a health promotion setting. • • Helping patients with GP registration and administration needs & advocating on their behalf to Listening to peoples’ needs and identifying other support services. NHS services. • Taking on in-depth and complex casework where patients may face significant barriers to accessing healthcare. • Completing data collection forms with the patient. • Responding to queries on our advice line. Student Placement volunteers are usually allocated one face-to-face shift per week. The rest of the week will be spent on our advice line and following up complex cases. Job Purpose • Research and apply to UK Trusts and Foundations that are relevant to our work in the UK supporting people excluded from healthcare. This will include major funders alongside multiple small unrestricted funding opportunities. • Work with front line teams at Doctors of the World to write applications for statutory contracts. • Ensure that all Trust administration – thanking, reporting and grant claims are completed. • Maintain an up to date and exact record of UK Trust and Foundation fundraising to provide information for budgeting and forecasting. Fundraising/Income generation Key Duties • Take the lead on identifying opportunities for and developing high-quality applications and proposals to secure funding from charitable trusts and UK statutory sources. for our UK projects. Lead on identifying prospective funders and add to our portfolio of established trusts and grant making bodies. • • Work closely with DotW Services and Policy & Advocacy teams to proactively develop projects and the project pipeline in response to and in anticipation of the funding opportunities that are in line with delivering the organisational strategy. • Take a relationship fundraising approach to trusts and foundations fundraising cultivating strong relationships including engagement with potential funders prior to applying where relevant and possible. • Work with colleagues to identify priority funding opportunities and develop compelling and targeted applications for funding. • Manage all UK Trusts and Foundations proposal(s) and reporting deadlines, ensuring funders are continually informed of the organisation’s progress in appropriate areas. • Work closely with the finance department to ensure all income is correctly allocated and efficiently managed. • Prepare budget and income projections ensuring income is correctly allocated. • Deliver plans against agreed income targets, monitoring, evaluating and reporting as necessary. • Stay ahead of trends in Trusts funding and proactively recommend changes to our funding plan. • Network to build relationships with key grant makers and other influential stakeholders. Job Purpose DOTW tackles health inequalities by helping some of the most marginalised with vulnerabilities in health to access healthcare and wider support services via our clinic and advocacy programme. We provide holistic health assessments for service users to identify risks, stressors and protective factors that might impact on health. You will reduce health inequalities by coordinating our clinic and our advice line (alongside a wider team). The people that we see often have complex needs and we offer a range of services: • We offer primary care health checks, healthcare advocacy, we help with referrals, informing on what to expect and advising on rights and charging within the NHS. • We see people who have been exposed to violence including trafficking and domestic violence and identify needs to ensure on-going support. • We see people living in destitution and support access to appropriate services. • We work with partner organisations to promote health and wellbeing by addressing the wider social and environmental determinants of health. • We see people refused secondary care and advocate on their behalf to ensure they can access the treatment they are entitled to. As a member of DOTW’s services team, central to your role will be the day-to-day operational coordination of our services. You will provide support and oversight to volunteers delivering these services, including ensuring adherence to DOTW’s policies and procedures, assisting volunteers in resolving complex cases on behalf of service users in vulnerable situations and coordinating and prioritising casework. You will draw on your experience of delivering effective advocacy on behalf of excluded groups and your highly effective coordination and muti-tasking skills.
