I am a visually impaired young person who is energetic, curious, and eager to learn. I’m looking for a Personal Assistant to support me with tandem cycling, social and community activities, and some occasional practical help. Living independently is important to me — but so is enjoying life, learning, and thriving. I’m looking for someone who can support me to do exactly that.
Duties and Responsibilities:
General Practical, Reading and Outreach Support
Your support will help me take part in meaningful activities, learn new things, and build confidence. This may include:
- Taking me to various appointments when needed
- Reading stories to me
- Supporting me to take part in social activities together
- Encouraging new experiences and helping me stay active and engaged
I also enjoy going on rides on my tandem bicycle. It is desirable that you know how to ride a bicycle safely so that we can go on short trips together.
Communication and Social Support
As I am visually impaired, I rely on clear and consistent verbal communication. While my English is good and I attend mainstream school, I appreciate someone who is talkative, engaging, and easy to communicate with.

Job Description
Job Title: Personal Assistant
Wages: £15 per hour
Hours: 2 hours, any time Tuesdays after 4.00pm or Wednesdays 10.30-5.00pm, occasional cover 2 hours over the weekend.
Location: Edinburgh
Contract: Zero hours, with holiday pay
Hello! I’m a wheelchair user, with a professional background in academia, third sector, government and the arts. These days I work full-time from home, running a social enterprise. I’m looking for someone to provide me with reliable, regular support for 2 hours any time every Tuesday after 4.00pm, or Wednesdays 10.30-5.00pm, and occasional 2-hour cover for my weekend PA if she’s off. I need support with things around the house and minor personal care. Exactly what time can be flexible, by agreement. There may sometimes be scope for additional hours if needed and it suits you.
Attitude is important. I need practical support to get on with my life. I don’t need ‘looking after’ and protecting! Attention to detail matters, e.g. I have limited reach, so I need PAs to remember to leave things where I can reach them. Good communication is important too, e.g. if you’re unavoidably going to be late. I sometimes work with senior people in government and elsewhere, so confidentiality is a must. Previous experience of providing support to a disabled person would be helpful, but it isn’t essential if you’re willing to learn. And it’s obviously important (for both of us!) that we get on well.
I have some respiratory and other issues which mean I’m still at clinical risk from Covid, so I need my PAs to be careful about ensuring my safety, e.g. by wearing a mask in the house (I can supply). Happy to talk through any queries or concerns around this.
You will need to have, or be able to get, a National Insurance Number and to be or become a member of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme (https://www.mygov.scot/pvg-scheme). This is now a requirement for all such care roles in Scotland. Please don’t let that put you off. I am very happy to assist you with these if necessary.
Thanks so much for your interest!
Key tasks
- Carry out routine basic housework at my direction, e.g. wash up, cleaning, laundry, put clothes away, water plants, fill kettle, put shopping away, etc.
- Assist with minor personal care, as required, e.g. help with compression socks, or to put a coat on.
- Occasional shopping, collect prescriptions, post letters, etc.
- Occasionally assist with food preparation, as required.
- Undertake other tasks that need doing around the house – and garden if you’re up for it! – as may reasonably be required.
- Take all possible Covid-safety measures.
- Possibly accompany me, e.g. to (very occasional) in-person seminars, meetings, medical appointments.
- Support efficient effective administration related to this role, e.g. promptly check and sign timesheets, provide me with prompt information if you change address.
Person specification
Essential things you need:
- Good organisational skills
- Good listening skills
- Reliability and punctuality
- Flexible approach
- Attention to detail, thoroughness
- Happy to be directed but also able to use initiative appropriately when needed.
- Have, or be willing and able to get, a National Insurance Number and membership of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme.
Desirable things you might have:
- Previous experience of supporting a disabled person, or of living or working with a disabled person.
- Interest/s in any of the following: social policy, sociology, economics, politics, equality, the arts, clinical science, environment, health and social care, aerosol physics/ clean air technology.

I am looking for Personal Assistants who are friendly and approachable with a good sense of humour. They must be able to give me the space I need to continue developing but also guide me. Someone who is lively and fun, who loves music, singing and reading stories to others. A reliable, punctual and honest individual.
It is essential that the postholder have experience of supporting people with autism or learning difficulties including being able to support with emotional dysregulation. An interest in alternative therapies would also be beneficial. The postholder must be a member of the PVG scheme or willing to join. As a Personal Assistant is required to work one to one, it is important that the employer and employee maintain an open and honest relationship.
An important part of the job is supporting me with my diet. Full training in this will be provided.
After you have spent significant time getting to know me, you will have the option to learn about my enzyme therapy. Please note that you will already be able to calculate percentages confidently using a calculator to be able to carry out the enzyme therapy.
Working hours are 9-hour shifts. There is the possibility of extra hours some evenings and cover for respite including overnight. Day or days to be agreed. I live on the 44 bus route (EH8).
There is a total of three nine-hour shifts to be filled per week. The employer would prefer two personal assistants, one doing one shift per week and the other two shifts per week.

The aim of the job is to provide the assistance required by the employer, a disabled man through a rugby injury.
Previous experience is not in any way necessary. An open mind, honesty and a sense of humour are probably the most important attributes to bring to the table. It also requires an ability to listen to requests and directions, the ability to diligently and competently execute these instructions, and the capacity to also show initiative and work without the need for supervision. Getting the right assistance at the right time is a huge help to leading my life independently.
The person should be honest, reliable & punctual as well as reasonably flexible. Have a good sense of humour, be enthusiastic, practical and hygienic. A respect for privacy and confidentiality are essential. Basic computer skills and a driving licence would be a bonus, but not at all essential.
I’m interested in all kinds of sport, particularly going to Murrayfield and local rugby matches, going to the cinema, music of almost all varieties, particularly folk music, world and current affairs, social anthropology, the festival & all sorts of extra curricular activities including beekeeping!
The position is permanent with paid holidays and pension contributions and with a potential for additional hours as part of holiday/sickness cover if those extra hours are suitable to the successful applicant. Extra permanent hours may also be negotiable.
