- Having conversations around the next project the people we support would like to see in their gardens

- Friendly and Approachable
- Reliable, Kind and Patient
- A good communicator (including listener)
- Be able to work alone and with others
- Willing to volunteer within guidelines and to take direction where necessary

We are looking for a patient and chatty volunteer who can communicate with a clear and loud voice, to visit a lovely gentleman in his 70s in Woolwich. His love for music is something he would love to share with a visitor, enjoying the 50s, 60s and 70s through sound.
This gentleman is blind and communicates differently depending on the day. His engagement may fluctuate between quietly appreciating your company and loving a long chat. Your visit would be a gentle check-in — sharing a cuppa, a chat, and simply being present.
We offer a lifelong befriending service for adults with learning disabilities. Matching the skills and interests of passionate visitors with the specific hobbies and interests of the people we visit. We offer a lifelong befriending service for adults with learning disabilities. Matching the skills and interests of passionate visitors with the specific hobbies and interests of the people we visit. Visitors visit six times a year and, in many cases, the visitor is the only person in someone’s life who isn’t paid to be there for them.
This is a Check in visit role, meaning that your visits are likely to be short - on average 30 minutes or less. Some of the people we visit may be unable to communicate with words. Sometimes the person might choose not to meet with their visitor. Your visit is however very important, and these are some of the things you could be doing on a visit: • Checking in on their well-being and speak to support staff to get an update on how the person is doing • You might be able to bring a treat that the person enjoys, like chocolates or fruit. • Some people we support enjoy sensory experiences so items that will stimulate their senses can also help you create a sense of connection with the person you visit. Your volunteer manager will be happy to help you with ideas and suggestions.
As a Mencap volunteer visitor you will be:
- Friendly and approachable
- Accepting of others who might be different to yourself
- Reliable and patient
- Passionate about supporting people with a with a learning disability.

We are looking for a positive, compassionate and caring Support Workers to join our team in Haywards Heath on a relief basis, where we support three people in supported living who have profound and multiple learning disabilities, autism, sensory impairment and physical disabilities.
We would prefer you to be a driver but not essential.
The people within the service have a busy schedule and love to be out and about but will require support when going out in the community. The adults we support enjoy a variety of hobbies and activities. We use a dynamic approach to enable the people we support to communicate through alternative tools and methods, such as using Makaton or a photo translation book.
As a Support Worker, flexibility is key for both yourself and for the service, you may be required to work a variety of different shifts throughout the week, including mornings, evenings, sleep ins and weekends (Payment for sleep ins is compliant and competitive with national living wage). The best thing about flexibility It's a two-way street, while we may require that you work a variety of shifts, we also understand that you’ll have your own commitments, and we will try to factor this into our rotas.
You must be able to demonstrate a real commitment to Mencap and the work that we do, alongside the wonderful people we support. We are looking for people with a ‘can-do’ attitude who are strongly motivated, outgoing, caring and have a calm demeanour when needed.
What does a Support Worker do?

- Excellent communication skills and Relationship building – supporting the people we support to understand the world around them and promoting positive relationships.
- Community & Social Inclusion - supporting individuals to access and participate in their local community and social events to promote life skills and individuality.
- Personal care - helping people to get ready for the day. This may include prompting the people we support to take their medication and assisting with bathing, showering and using the bathroom. Not all Support Worker roles include high levels of personal care.
Shift times:
All our services are 24hr care. We prepare the rotas at least 4 weeks in advance so you can still plan your personal and social life!
• Days: Between 07:00-22:00
• Waking Nights: 22:00-07:00
There is also a non contractual sleep-in available where you will receive an enhanced flat rate payment of £63.70

- Excellent communication skills and the ability to build meaningful relationships.
- Flexibility to work various shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- A positive and empathetic attitude towards individuals with learning disabilities.
Contract options:

- As a general guide; some day shifts can start from 7.00 am or 9.00 am and can finish between 9.00 pm or 10.00 pm, these are usually split into 2 shifts. Certain services will also have sleep in shifts or Waking Night shifts as well.

We're on the lookout for volunteers to join us at the 2026 London Marathon. As a volunteer on the day you’ll support Mencap to make change through raising funds and cheering on our superstar marathon runners.
The 2026 TCS London Marathon is a 26.2 mile run around central London with over 40,000 people taking part. Mencap has over 128 runners taking part and fundraising for us. They will run on Sunday 26 April 2026. Each of our runners will try to raise £2,500. We want to give them as much support as possible so will have cheer points along the route, and a post race reception to congratulate them for their achievement!
We need volunteers to join us at one of our 3 cheer points - the cheer points are at Tower Bridge, Embankment, or at the Finish Line on the Mall! For these roles you will need to come ready to cheer and high five our amazing runners! For the finish line, there are 2 roles you could do, either meeting the runners at the finish line to congratulate them and guide them to the team, or to meet them on Horse Guards parade and hand out snacks and congrats!
We are asking you to volunteer for around 4 hours, rain or shine, so be ready to bring the enthusiasm to help them cross the line!
What will I be doing? You will be volunteering at one of Mencap's cheer points on April 26th. This might include:
- Cheering our runners
- Waving flags
- Making lots of noise with clappers and whistles
- Thanking people for running and raising money for Mencap
To sign up to volunteer with us, please choose the time and location that works best for you on the following link:
- To sign up to cheer at Tower Bridge, choose Tower Bridge Road
- To sign up to cheer at Embankment, choose on of the time slots for Victoria Embankment Gardens
- To sign up to cheer, direct and hand out snacks to the finished runners at the Finish Line, choose one of the time slots for The Mall, London
The London Marathon is the biggest one day fundraising event in the world! Because of this, it is really popular to both run and with families and friends to come and support the runners. Some of our cheer points are in busy areas of the route, and can get very busy. Sometimes, roads or tube stations might also be closed, so you may not be able to go your planned route to your cheer point. However, you will have a volunteer manager on the who will be on hand to support you who you can call to give you guidance on where to go! Earlier and later volunteers shifts will also be less busy if you prefer to be away from the crowd.
Our events are vital to Mencap, bringing people together to share experiences, launch programmes and celebrate successes! They also often help to raise funds for our services, such as the Learning Disability Helpline, advocacy services, and national campaigns such as Homes not Hospitals.
We couldn't run these events without the support of volunteers, so by giving a few hours of your time you can help us to host events, raise vital funds to support Mencap's work and support people with a learning disability to live happy and healthy lives.
You'll be part of a diverse and inclusive team alongside volunteers with and without a learning disability. You will represent Mencap and help to promote our work and raise awareness for people with a learning disability at iconic events across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
